What are the Five Stages of Panchakarma?
Stage Five: Rejuvenation

Rejuvenation is the final stage of Panchakarma, where the focus shifts from cleansing to rebuilding, restoring and strengthening the body.

After the elimination process, this stage supports the body through nourishing foods, lifestyle practices, herbs and restorative rituals to help rebuild digestion, energy and vitality.

In this final part of our Panchakarma series, Sarita Blankenburg, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Founder of Ayurveda New Zealand, explains why rejuvenation is essential for integrating the benefits of Panchakarma and supporting long-term wellbeing.

What are the Five Stages of Panchakarma?
Stage Four: Virechana

Virechana is the elimination stage of Panchakarma, where the body is supported to release accumulated toxins through gentle purgation.

This stage involves the use of carefully prescribed laxative medicine to help clear toxins from the digestive tract and support deep cleansing from within.

After Virechana, foods are slowly reintroduced to gently rebuild digestion and support the body as it transitions into the final stage of Panchakarma.

In this part of our Panchakarma series, Sarita Blankenburg, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Founder of Ayurveda New Zealand, explains why Virechana is an important stage in the Panchakarma process.

What are the Five Stages of Panchakarma?
Stage Three: Pradhana Karma

Pradhana Karma is the main treatment stage of Panchakarma — often considered the most enjoyable part of the process.

During this stage, the body is supported through deeply nourishing Ayurvedic therapies and treatments, chosen according to each person’s individual constitution, health picture and needs.

These treatments help support the elimination of toxins that have been loosened and mobilised during the earlier preparation stages.

In this part of our Panchakarma series, Sarita Blankenburg, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Founder of Ayurveda New Zealand, explains why Pradhana Karma is such a central and restorative stage of the Panchakarma process.

What are the Five Stages of Panchakarma?
Stage Two: Snehapana

Snehapana is the internal oleation stage of Panchakarma, where medicated ghee is taken in carefully prescribed amounts to support the body’s cleansing process.

This stage helps to soften and loosen accumulated toxins, preparing them to move from the deeper tissues towards the digestive tract for elimination.

In this part of our Panchakarma series, Sarita Blankenburg, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Founder of Ayurveda New Zealand, explains why Snehapana is an important second stage in the Panchakarma process.

What are the Five Stages of Panchakarma?
Stage One: Purva Karma

Purva Karma is the important preparation stage of Panchakarma - designed to ready the body for deep cleansing.

During this stage, clients are guided to follow simple daily cleansing rituals, a light, easily digestible diet and specific digestive aids to help support digestive fire, loosen accumulated toxins and prepare the body for the next phase of Panchakarma.

In this part of our Panchakarma series, Sarita Blankenburg, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Founder of Ayurveda New Zealand, explains why Purva Karma is an essential first step in the Panchakarma process.

Part Two: What are the benefits of Panchakarma?

Many people describe feeling lighter, clearer and more balanced after Panchakarma - with positive changes often felt in digestion, energy, sleep, mood, weight, clarity of mind and overall wellbeing.

Clients with chronic health conditions may also experience significant improvements in their symptoms, as Panchakarma works to support the body in addressing deeper underlying imbalances.

In this second part of our Panchakarma series, Sarita Blankenburg, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Founder of Ayurveda New Zealand, shares some of the common positive changes people may experience after this deeply restorative Ayurvedic therapy.
