HERB SPOTLIGHT: Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) 🌿

Echinacea is a flowering herb native to North America with a long history of traditional use and extensive scientific interest for its role in supporting immune health.

Traditional Uses:
• Support the body’s natural immune response
• Provide short-term support during the early stages of seasonal illness
• Support recovery from common winter ailments
• Promote general wellbeing during times of increased immune demand

In traditional Western herbalism, echinacea is often regarded as an immune-supportive herb, commonly used at the first signs of feeling unwell.

What Does the Evidence Say?
Research suggests echinacea may:
• Help reduce the duration of common cold symptoms when taken early
• Modestly reduce the severity of cold symptoms in some individuals
• Support healthy immune function during acute upper respiratory tract infections
• Be most effective when used at the onset of symptoms rather than as a long-term preventative strategy

How to Take Echinacea
• Tea: A traditional option during times of increased immune demand.
• Tinctures: Convenient, flexible, and commonly used at the first signs of illness.
• Tablets or capsules: Ideal for those who prefer a simple, standardised dose.

Which Option Is Right for You?
• Tea offers a comforting, traditional preparation.
• Tinctures provide flexibility and ease of use.
• Tablets or capsules offer convenience and consistency.

Available in-store as loose leaf tea, tinctures, and tablets to suit your individual preferences and lifestyle.

✨Nutrient Spotlight✨
Vitamin K

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin which is needed for the production of proteins involved in blood clotting, and bone metabolism and remodelling.

🦴Bone Health - Research has linked vitamin K intake, through supplementation, with improved bone mineral density and strength, a reduction in hip and overall fracture incidence, and decreased loss in vertebral height in postmenopausal women (PMID:16801507 ; PMID: 23525894).

🫀Heart Health - Emerging evidence also suggests that sufficient vitamin K intake may play a role in heart health, including reduced coronary heart disease risk and mortality, and reduced progression of coronary artery calcification (PMID:15514282 ; PMID:19386744).

🥬 Food Sources: good sources include greens leafy veg, vegetable oils, meat, dairy, eggs, natto (fermented soybeans), and other fermented foods including cheese.

🦠 Fun Fact: some forms of vitamin K (known as menaquinones or vitamin K2) are also made by bacteria in our gut, another reason to look after our gut health and the bacteria that keep it healthy!

💊 Supplementation: vitamin K supplements come in many forms, but vitamin K2 MK-7 was found in one study to be the most highly absorbed and bioavailable (PMID: 17158229), and luckily for you, we stock several natural K2 MK-7 supplements here in store.

If you would like to chat more about whether a vitamin K2 supplement is right for you, feel free to message us directly or pop in store 🥰
