Better late, than never!

Emmy was supposed to attend camp on Sunday, but her body decided to get a little congested. So we treated her with vitamins and all sorts of things and this morning when she woke up, she was a completely new person and she got to attend her annual week-long (now 3 day long) camp at Camp Aldersgate.

Emmy has been doing good since her last seizure. We stopped weaning Onfi, but also realize we may have to increase it with other meds because her doctors are really urging us to put Emmy on Estradiol. Emmy has zero estrogen and definitely needs it for brain and bone health now and especially when she is older. Only problem is, she is so sensitive that she will most likely have increased “episodes”.

Yes, I’ve researched natural estrogen options, but the truth is she would have to spend every waking moment taking supplements and drinking soy milk🤪

I also know that women NEED estrogen. Need it to survive physically and mentally. The majority of female Alzheimer’s patients were never given hormone replacements in menopause😳. Women need it.

So pray as we convene with her team in the next 2 months to create a plan of action. She will need full dosing of estrogen and we’ve never done that before. We know the micro dose increased her episodes, so I’m praying her brain stays calm as we try to push her into puberty.

Until then, while Emmy spends a few days away, Randy and I are going to spend a couple of days focusing on our other 3 kids who take the backseat while Emmy is around. It’s just the way it is, and that’s okay. We’ve all adjusted but also realize that it’s important to have some quality time away from Emmy.

Since last year- Emmy wanted a garden. While I procrastinated on building a raised garden in the back yard, we planted a grapevine in the front garden, which I never thought it would survive but it’s HUGE.

Emmy planted a few tomato plants in her small planter she can reach while in her chair, and one actually grew!

I had already started a ground-level garden in the back a few years ago, but it was covered over by the dirt guy when we needed rocks moved- but the mullein survived.

And when Emmy insisted I plant a tiny grapevine two years ago- I never thought it would produce fruit, but it’s covered in grapes!!

And after I finished the raised U shape bed last month- I finally planted some seeds and potatoes and they are sprouting as well. Corn is popping up in rows!!

Emmy says it’s “her” garden, but I’m pretty sure it belongs to the person who did all the work for free…

Emmy had a seizure last week…

We began slowly weaning the medicine Onfi she was put on in 2020 when she began having “episodes” of 10-20 second seizures. We determined the seizures weren’t damaging when we took Emmy to Dr Harch in New Orleans and had her brain analyzed while in his Hyperbaric Oxygen Tank. Emmy was hooked up to an EEG.

We also realized in the past 2 years- these episodes were occurring while women around her were on their cycle or just about ready to have their cycle.

Onfi didn’t seem to be working any more and since it’s a benzo- we chose not to increase it.

So over the last 4 months we started weaning slowly, until last week.

Emmy’s episode began like normal, but then continued. After a few minutes her cheek and hand began twitching- so after 5 minutes of this, we used the rescue nasal spray for the first time.

She’s gone years without a seizure except when she had a really high fever a couple years ago.

She is finally back to her old-self.

Which leads me to her hormones. Emmy’s ovaries are dead from the 2 rounds of chemo for the two bone marrow transplants. So she has zero estrogen. We have tried to put her on a small dose of estrogen because women NEED estrogen for brain health, heart health and bone health. But the small dose made her have really bad “episodes”. But we’ve talked with doctors and she has to go on it. Plant based estrogen just isn’t enough to take her into puberty and work on those areas mentioned before.

So pray for her as we talk with Neuro over the next couple months on how to control her episodes when we start her back on estrogen in the fall.
It’s common for kids with brain damage to have seizures for a time as they are introduced to estrogen, but we still hate them. They literally freak out Randy and I and time-warp us back to Virginia, which spirals us into horrible thoughts of the past.

Emmy still keeps us on our toes, but thankfully she is still full of joy and otherwise healthy!

Many have messaged me about the audiobook- so here goes.

The company I was referred to dropped the ball. They thought they could use AI to edit the separate readings and messed the whole thing up. I have been fighting to get the original audio to send somewhere else, but that didn’t happen.

I demanded a refund, which also hasn’t happened. I was informed yesterday my refund will be sent back to me today, so we will see.

At this point, I’ll most likely try to go with someone else, but it took me weeks to recover emotionally after reading my book the first time. I’m not sure when and where, yet, but I hope to do it all again soon.

But in the meantime- Emmy has finally driven me crazy enough with her request for a garden that I have begun building her one.

The final design will be a U shape (or n, depending how you look at it) so she can drive up the middle to plant and pick her veggies.

I couldn’t just buy garden bricks and boards, because she was adamant that she has fairy lights hanging across the top- so I had to concrete 4 posts on the outside corners…

Once they are set, I can then screw in the outside boards and finish up the center, which I either have to pay someone to concrete or put paver stones down, because this portion of the yard is a mud hole and the whole thing will be useless to her unless she can drive a her wheelchair up to it.

Anywho, I’ll post the completed “Emmy designed garden” later this week. Yes, she designed the whole thing. And yes, she watches my every move very closely. And while she couldn’t understand why it had to look like a 🟩 to start with and kept saying “I just don’t see what you’re doing” , I think she will see it once I remove the front board and start creating her U shaped garden.

And all of this is being done in the evenings when I’m exhausted, because my business partner and I finally opened a bath and body store in Cabot and have spent every minute of everyday cleaning, painting, designing and stocking products! So if you are in town or want to buy one of our many non-toxic, family safe products, head to RenovareCollective.com or stop by our store Wednesday- Saturday!!
