Happy National Picnic Day! 🧺☀️

Today got me thinking...

A picnic is a lot like healthcare.

Everyone brings something to the table.

The nurses.
The CNAs.
The CMAs.
The housekeeping staff.
The dietary team.
The office staff.
The therapists.

No one person does it all, but when everyone works together, amazing things happen.

Healthcare can be busy, stressful, and demanding, but it's also full of people who show up every day to care for others and support one another.

So whether you're enjoying an actual picnic today or spending your day caring for residents and patients, we hope you find a moment to enjoy the sunshine, share a laugh, and appreciate the people around you.

Most people don't realize just how many nursing homes and long-term care facilities are spread across North Dakota.

There are roughly 75 licensed nursing facilities serving communities across the state, many of them located in small rural towns. Together, they provide more than 5,200 licensed beds for residents who need ongoing care.

When you think about that, it's pretty incredible.

Because behind every one of those beds is a person.

Someone's mom.
Someone's dad.
Someone's grandparent.
Someone who spent decades building a life in their community and wants to remain close to family, friends, neighbors, and familiar faces.

The challenge is that many of these facilities continue to face staffing shortages, especially in rural areas. Healthcare workers retire. Communities are small. Recruiting can be difficult. And the need for care continues to grow.

That's where travel nurses, CNAs, CMAs, and LPNs make such a meaningful difference.

They're not just filling a shift.

They're helping facilities keep beds open.

They're helping residents stay in their hometowns.

They're supporting exhausted healthcare teams who deeply care about their residents and communities.

I've seen firsthand how one traveler can completely change the stress level of a facility.

One person.

One contract.

One decision to help.

And sometimes that's all it takes to make a real difference for an entire community. ❤️

Of all the places I've visited in Minnesota, Itasca State Park is one of my absolute favorites. As a traveler, you're used to driving, so to run over to this park would be nothing for you! But what a treat it is!

There's something almost impossible to comprehend about standing at the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

This river eventually travels more than 2,300 miles, touches 10 states, and becomes one of the most important waterways in North America.

And yet...

It starts as a stream small enough for a child to walk across.

I'm amazed by it every time I'm there!

I always have my camera with me because there's beauty everywhere. You could stand in one place and have 1,000 photos in minutes!

Towering pines
Well worn forest trails
Reflections on the water, rocks in the water, splashing people, solitude, ripples, I can't find a big enough word for how amazing it is here
Wildlife can appear even with people all around

Even the dragonflies are incredible—some of the largest and most colorful I've ever seen.

It's one of those places that reminds you to slow down, look around, and appreciate the world around you. At least it does that for me.

Five years may sound small in some industries.

But in healthcare staffing?

Five years means early mornings, hard conversations, last-minute schedule changes, long drives, staffing shortages, problem solving, teamwork, and a whole lot of people trusting you to help care for their communities.

S'mores have become a summertime tradition across America, bringing people together around campfires, lakes, backyard fire pits, and camping trips.

And honestly, they're about more than the ingredients.

They're about slowing down.

Sharing stories.

Laughing with friends and family.

Watching the fire crackle while the sun goes down.

What do you call it and where are you from? I grew up calling it "coke" even if it wasn't.
The server would say do you want a coke and I would say, yes a Mt. Dew please :)

Then I moved to ND and said, hey can I get a coke and they actually brought me "Coke"!

It was very confusing when I let them know I actually wanted a Dew 😂 I learned. What other ND words make you pause?

One of the things I love most about working in healthcare staffing is seeing the difference a single caregiver can make.

A nurse picks up a contract in a small town.

A resident gets to stay close to their spouse.

A facility fills a critical staffing gap.

A community breathes a little easier.

It's easy to think of healthcare jobs as shifts, contracts, and schedules.

Sometimes when people hear there is a nursing shortage, it just sounds like another statistic.

But out here, in rural North Dakota, it feels a lot more personal than that.

It means a facility wondering how they're going to cover the next schedule.

It means a resident hoping they can stay in the community they've called home for decades.

It means healthcare teams working extra hours because they care deeply about the people they serve.

North Dakota has been facing nursing workforce challenges for years, and projections continue to show ongoing shortages, particularly in rural communities. Nationally, the U.S. is expected to need roughly 193,000 new registered nurses each year through 2032 just to keep up with demand, retirements, and workforce turnover.

193,000!

And while numbers matter, what stays with me are the people behind those numbers.

Healthcare has always been about people.

That's why I'm so grateful for every healthcare professional who continues showing up for these communities every day.

I love going to Sioux Falls as there's so much more than people realize!

If you're working a contract nearby or just looking for a fun day trip, here are 5 places I'd (Tammey Evans-Brown) recommend checking out:

🦋 **Butterfly House & Aquarium**
Walking through a room full of butterflies never gets old. If you've never had a butterfly land on you, add this to your list! The flutter around - a LOT of them! - and you just sit, stand, or walk through. It's so amazing!

🦁 **Great Plains Zoo**
I've always loved this zoo. It's easy to get around and when I was last there they had a baby rhino!

🌊 **Falls Park**
The city's most famous landmark for good reason. The waterfalls, walking paths, and views are worth seeing in every season. Although flood season can be a bit daunting! Should be perfect this year with so little snow and no flooding.

🛍️ **Downtown Sioux Falls**
Local shops, great restaurants, coffee shops, public art, and plenty of places to wander and explore.

🚶 **Sertoma Park**
Beautiful trails, green space, and a perfect place to slow down and enjoy a nice day outside.

One of my favorite things about travel healthcare is discovering places you might never have visited otherwise.
