Raking, hauling, moving furniture, one more hike before fall settles in, all of it adds up. Labor Day weekend has a way of turning into the last big push of yard work and home projects before the season shifts, and it is one of the more common weekends for us to hear about a sore lower back, a cranky knee, or a shoulder that is not quite right.

Most of these aches resolve on their own. Some do not, especially if there was already something going on underneath. If this weekend left you more sore than usual, or if it is a familiar ache that keeps coming back, it is worth getting checked rather than waiting it out again.

In one clinical survey of osteoarthritis patients, 69 percent reported their joint pain was sensitive to weather changes.

As temperatures drop, joints and tissue that are already compromised tend to become more sensitive to pressure and temperature shifts. Reduced circulation plays a role, and tissue that never fully healed the first time around often responds more to weather changes than healthy tissue does.

That stiffness is worth paying attention to. It is often a sign the underlying issue was never fully addressed, not just a seasonal inconvenience.

Piezoelectric shockwave therapy is one of the non-surgical options we use at Hecker Sports Medicine to support the body's own repair process in stubborn joint and tendon issues, rather than just managing symptoms until the next cold snap.

Office workers spend roughly two-thirds of the workday sitting, and low back pain shows up in a majority of them, with some studies putting the rate as high as 75 percent.

The shift from a summer of movement to a fall of desk time and longer commutes is one of the most common, and most overlooked, triggers for neck, low back, and hip stiffness we see at Hecker Sports Medicine. It is rarely one big event. It is hours of sitting, day after day, layered on top of an old injury or ache that never fully resolved.

That kind of stiffness responds well to attention early. A short evaluation can tell you whether you are dealing with simple deconditioning or something that needs a closer look.

Do not wait for it to become a bigger problem before you check in.

As summer wraps up and fall schedules begin, it's a smart time to check in on any injury or pain that hasn't fully resolved before the cold sets in.

Many musculoskeletal conditions don't improve simply with time. Instead, they linger for weeks or months, leading people to compensate, modify activity, or avoid movements that aggravate their symptoms.

Whether you're dealing with persistent knee pain, heel pain, shoulder discomfort, or an injury that never quite healed, an early evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and determine the most appropriate course of care before fall activities are in full swing.

A $70 Athletic Training Center (ATC) Evaluation is an accessible first step. You'll receive a comprehensive assessment, a better understanding of what's contributing to your symptoms, and recommendations tailored to your goals and activity level.

Don't carry an unresolved injury into another season. Getting the right evaluation now can help you make informed decisions about your recovery and long-term function.

The end of National Wellness Month is a great time to check in with yourself.

It's easy to put off that sore knee, stiff shoulder, or nagging foot pain when life gets busy. But those small issues rarely become more convenient once fall arrives with school, sports, work, and packed calendars.

At Hecker Sports Medicine, we believe the best care starts by looking at the whole person, not just the area that hurts.

Your movement, activity level, health history, and goals all play a role in finding the right path forward.

Rather than simply masking symptoms, our focus is on understanding what's contributing to your discomfort and helping you move with greater confidence.

As summer winds down, consider it an opportunity to take care of the aches and stiffness you've been meaning to address.

A little attention now may help you head into fall feeling stronger, more comfortable, and ready for whatever the season brings.

Recovery is an important part of training.

One of the recovery tools we use at Hecker Sports Medicine is Normatec compression therapy. It uses sequential air compression that moves through the legs (or arms) in a specific pattern to help support circulation and assist the body's natural recovery process after exercise or treatment.

Many athletes use Normatec during heavy training blocks, and it can also be beneficial for patients recovering from a therapy session or procedure as part of their overall rehabilitation plan.

Normatec can be a valuable addition to a comprehensive recovery strategy that includes the right exercise, rehabilitation, and other therapies recommended for your condition.

If you're curious about whether Normatec compression is appropriate for your recovery plan, ask about it during your next visit to Hecker Sports Medicine.

Many overuse injuries begin in pre-season or early in your training block.

With two-a-days, rising temperatures, and a sudden increase in training volume, it's common to see issues like shin splints, IT band pain, and early tendon irritation show up during the first few weeks of practice.

A few simple habits can go a long way:
✔️ Stay ahead of hydration—not just during practice, but throughout the day.
✔️ Increase training gradually whenever possible, especially if you've had time off.
✔️ Don't ignore sharp or worsening pain. Soreness is expected. Pain that changes how you move isn't.

The sooner a nagging issue is evaluated, the better the chance of addressing it before it affects the rest of the season.

If something isn't improving on its own, Hecker Sports Medicine can help you identify the cause and get you back to training with confidence.

August in Colorado sometimes comes with smoky skies, and that can change more than just the view.

On days with poor air quality, it's worth checking the Air Quality Index (AQI) before heading out for a workout. If conditions aren't ideal, consider moving high-intensity training indoors, staying on top of hydration, and giving yourself extra time to warm up. Smoke can affect breathing and make exercise feel more demanding than usual.

Adjusting your training for a few days is better than pushing through and dealing with unnecessary setbacks.

If changes to your routine leave you with lingering aches or inflammation, Hecker Sports Medicine can help evaluate what's going on and create a plan to keep you moving safely all season long.

Meet Natasha Forgey, MSN, NP-BC

Natasha believes that great healthcare starts with listening. She takes the time to understand each patient's goals, answer questions, and build a treatment plan that fits their life—not just their diagnosis.

As a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner, Natasha brings a diverse clinical background to Hecker Sports Medicine. Before joining the practice, she cared for patients in Women and Children Services and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She earned her Master's in Nursing in 2020 and is also proud to have served our country as a member of the U.S. Air Force.

Today, Natasha works closely with patients seeking non-surgical solutions for joint pain and injuries. She values a collaborative, patient-centered approach that emphasizes restoring function and supporting the body's natural healing processes whenever appropriate, helping patients explore options before considering medication or surgery.

Outside the clinic, Natasha enjoys calling Fort Collins home with her husband and their two teenagers. You'll often find them taking advantage of everything Colorado has to offer, especially spending time in the mountains.

Natasha is currently booking PRP injection appointments for arthritis and joint pain. If you're looking for a non-surgical approach to managing joint pain, we'd love to help you learn whether PRP may be an appropriate option for your goals.
