What is now known as Howe Community Resource Center started out as a small parent resource room at Howe School. Realizing that the space at Howe School was limited and having bigger visions, stakeholders began looking for a permanent building. Monroe Ave (a former AAA) was purchased and remodeled through the hard work and generosity of many in the community. The name was changed in 2013 to Howe Community Resource Center, recognizing the role the center plays as a resource and our efforts in building community. By 2004, momentum had grown and many of the programs and services offered at the resource center were thriving. Oral Health Partnership was created and, in 2006, a state of the art, 3-chair dental clinic was added to provide full service dental care to underinsured or uninsured children. In 2009, we became a gateway agency for The Community Partnership for Children, thus beginning our parenting program

We know we have something very special and unique. As we look to the future, we look to expand the number of resource center created programs, as well as maintain partnership programs. The resource center is one of the three gateway agencies in our community that provide services to ensure children, prenatal to 5 years old, are safe, healthy, and ready for school. New programs and exciting new directions have called for new staff members. We have come a long way from that small, one room resource center and we are excited about where we will go next! We do not have service restrictions based on age or income, and we serve all of Brown County, so take a look at what we offer and join in the fun!

Families living in the 54301 and 54302 zip codes can enroll to receive a free, age-appropriate book mailed directly to their home each month at no cost. This program helps foster early literacy, strengthen parent-child connections, and nurture a lifelong love of reading from an early age. Currently, more than 800 families are enrolled.

By offering support, resources, and encouragement, we walk alongside families throughout their journey. Together, we are building a community where everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

Following the recent passing of the beloved Dolly Parton, we’ve received questions from our community about the future of the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and, specifically, the program here in Brown County. We are grateful to continue offering this resource thanks to the Green Bay Packaging George Kress Foundation as our lead sponsor, in partnership with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which allows us to provide these books at a lower cost.

We’ve also had several incredibly generous donors reach out to specifically support this initiative. Their generosity is helping ensure that children across Brown County can continue to have access to free books through the Imagination Library, and we are so grateful.

We want to take a moment to thank everyone who has thought of HCRC, reached out, and continues to support our mission. Your generosity makes a real difference for the families we serve.

Katie Groff, HCRC’s School-Based Mental Health Counselor, has been back on campus seeing students since school started this fall.

At the Back to School event at Howe Community Elementary School, we saw so many students excited to see Katie again. Some came up to ask if she would be seeing them this year, while others simply wanted to give her a hug and say hello.

Seeing that excitement from so many students is a beautiful reminder of why this work matters. Having a trusted adult they know and feel comfortable with can make such a meaningful difference for students and families.

We’re proud to continue supporting students at Howe Elementary Community School and to expand this work based on the needs of our community. This continued support is made possible in part by the Green Bay Packers Impact Grant, which provides a 1:1 match of up to $100,000.

On Saturday, September 12, our team participated in the annual Be The Light Walk in Green Bay as the "Howe4Hope" team. It was great to walk with a few GB Howe Elementary Community School staff, as well as see team members from Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin along the way!

As we continue learning how to walk alongside the children and families we serve, we also want to be part of the larger conversations happening in our community. The Be The Light Walk brings people together to raise awareness around su***de prevention while supporting local prevention, intervention and outreach efforts through the Brown County Coalition for Su***de Prevention - Wisconsin.

Following the walk, our team participated in a two-hour QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training. The training gave our team a deeper understanding of the realities surrounding su***de across our country, state and county, while equipping us with tools to recognize warning signs and better support the individuals and families we work alongside.

More than ever, this experience reminded us of the importance of mental health support in our community, including supporting parents as they navigate conversations around big feelings, difficult situations and the challenges their children may face as they grow.

A special thank you to Trina Myers, Executive Director of The Gathering Place, for leading our QPR training and sharing her knowledge and experience with our team. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and growing so we can better support the families.

How do we make sure the voices of the families we serve are being heard through our programming?

At Howe Community Resource Center, we have a Parent Advisory Council made up of participating HCRC families. The PAC gives parents a voice in helping us evaluate our programming, identify areas for improvement, and shape new ideas.

Here’s what that looks like:
• The Parent Advisory Council can help lead the creation of new programming and ideas.
• Current families help us evaluate our programs and identify ways we can improve.
• Parents have an opportunity to advocate not only for their own families, but for the families in our community.

Why I am on Parent Advisory:
“I am on the Parent Advisory to advocate for the program as a current family participant.”

What I enjoy about Parent Advisory:
“I get to advocate not only for myself and my family, but for other families as well, all while getting to watch the growth of Howe Community Resource Center.”

What I hope the group can do:
“I hope Parent Advisory will be able to advocate for families, which in turn will increase parent participation in events and activities.”

Parent voices matter, and we’re grateful to have families like Michalla helping us make sure those voices are part of the conversation.

For our Facilitated Playgroups, families who are not currently enrolled will need to register by calling 920-448-7340 and selecting the Parent Support extension. You can leave a voicemail with your name, phone number, number of children attending, and which playgroup you’d like to attend.

We’re grateful to the Green Bay Packers Foundation for a $3,000 grant supporting Howe Community Resource Center’s Women’s Support Group. 💚

This funding will help our team expand opportunities for women caregivers to connect, build supportive relationships, learn practical ways to manage stress, and prioritize their own well-being.

We’re looking forward to growing this work and sharing more with women and families across Brown County in the year ahead.
