✨ The Architects of Hoodoo

Hoodoo wasn’t built by one person. It was shaped by generations of Black people who carried the knowledge, skills, and traditions that kept our communities going.

🌿 Conjurers worked spiritual practices for protection, justice, luck, and more.

🌱 Root Doctors & Herbalists carried knowledge of roots, herbs, and traditional remedies.

🤱🏾 Midwives supported Black mothers and families through childbirth and postpartum care.

🔮 Diviners & Prayer Workers offered spiritual guidance through divination, scripture, and prayer.

🛍️ Rootwork Merchants supplied the herbs, roots, oils, candles, and curios used in spiritual work.

🖤 Elders & Community Practitioners passed down prayers, remedies, protective practices, and family traditions from one generation to the next.

Hoodoo survived because our ancestors practiced it, taught it, adapted it, and passed it down. Some were known spiritual workers; others quietly carried the knowledge in their homes and communities.

Today, we honor the hands that worked, the mouths that prayed, and the elders who kept the knowledge alive. 🌿🖤

👑🌿 Hoodoo Heritage Month: High John the Conqueror 🖤

Today, we’re giving honor to High John the Conqueror, one of the most beloved figures in African American folklore and Hoodoo tradition.

High John represents something our ancestors understood well: even when life tries to take everything from you, it cannot easily take your spirit, your wit, or your hope.

In one well-known telling, recorded by folklorist Zora Neale Hurston, High John becomes a symbol of the laughter, cleverness, and inner freedom that Black people held onto through enslavement.

His legacy lives on through the High John the Conqueror root, traditionally associated in Hoodoo with luck, success, personal power, and overcoming obstacles.

🌿 A little wisdom from Mama Lalu: Sometimes, your greatest power isn’t in fighting every battle. It’s in knowing yourself, keeping your faith, using your wisdom, and remembering who you are—even when life gets hard.

This Hoodoo Heritage Month, we’re honoring the stories, roots, and traditions passed down through generations. Every piece carries a history, and every story deserves to be told with care.
