Alabama ranked 50th in the nation for having a baby.

That’s a hard headline to read, especially when you spend your life supporting families through pregnancy and birth in this state.

But I don’t share this to create fear.

I share it because families deserve to be informed, prepared, heard, and supported.

A doula cannot fix the problems within our maternal healthcare system. We cannot promise a certain kind of birth or replace excellent medical care.

But we can make sure you don’t have to navigate it alone.

We can help you understand your options, know what questions to ask, communicate what matters to you, and have consistent support from someone who knows you and your story.

Where you give birth matters.
Who you choose as your provider matters.
Being informed matters.
And having someone beside you matters.

Alabama families deserve better.

And until the statistics reflect that, we’ll keep doing everything we can to help families walk into birth informed, supported, and confident.

Some days remind you exactly why you do what you do. 🤍

Today was one of those days.

Imagine Birth Doulas and Imagine Care Nannies had the privilege of coming together for the Parents Day Event hosted by Grow Our Village, and it was such a meaningful day from beginning to end.

We watched the documentary Holding Mother, which beautifully highlights something I’ve believed for years: we ask so much of new mothers, yet we’ve lost so much of the support that once surrounded the postpartum period. It sparked such an important conversation about what families really need and, more importantly, what each of us can do to help change that.

After the film, we listened to an incredible panel of professionals answer thoughtful questions and share ideas about how we can better support parents during one of the biggest transitions of their lives. It was encouraging to hear so many people passionate about creating real change in our community.

Meanwhile, our amazing Imagine Care Nannies were doing what they do best… loving on little ones in the Children’s Corner so parents could be fully present during the program. Watching our two teams serve families side by side was one of my favorite parts of the day. Birth support and childcare aren’t separate journeys. They’re simply different chapters in the same family’s story.

A huge thank you to Grow Our Village, the many sponsors who made this event possible, the panelists who shared their hearts and expertise, and every family who spent part of their Sunday with us.

Sometimes I have to stop and soak in moments like this.

We spend so much of our lives celebrating other families as they prepare to welcome their babies, and today we got to celebrate one of our own.

Lauren, watching this season unfold for you has been such a joy. You have loved so many Imagine Birth families so well, and now it’s your turn to be surrounded by that same love.

We already love this little baby so much, and we can’t wait to meet him. Thank you for letting us celebrate such a special season with you. 🤍

One of the most beautiful things we witness at births isn’t just the arrival of a baby.

It’s watching someone become a father.

We see the nervous pacing, the hand-holding, the encouragement, the tears, the quiet moments when everything changes in an instant.

We see partners learning how to support through contractions, advocating during difficult decisions, staying awake through long nights, and falling completely in love with a tiny person they’ve just met.

Birth transforms more than one life.

Today we’re celebrating the dads, fathers, partners, and support people who show up with love, patience, strength, and an open heart.

Thank you for changing diapers at 3 a.m., learning how to swaddle, supporting feeding journeys, carrying the mental load, and loving your families so well.

Today was one of those days that leaves you feeling hopeful about the future of birth in our community.

I was thrilled to attend Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children’s very first Doula Day alongside Ella Kirkland and Kimberly Pylant from Imagine Birth Doulas, as well as fellow doulas from True North Birth, Breathe Love Birth Doula Services, and Rocket City Doulas.

We spent the day meeting with the new Labor & Delivery Medical Director, the Directors of Antepartum and NICU, and members of hospital leadership to talk about something we all care deeply about: how we can work together to better support the families we serve.

One of my favorite parts of the day was simply being in the room. There was a genuine willingness to listen, learn, and collaborate. We talked about the role doulas play, the support we provide, and what it looks like when birth professionals from different backgrounds come together with the same goal of improving the experience and outcomes for mothers and babies.

We also toured Labor & Delivery, the OR, the NICU, and the Simulation Lab. Seeing the incredible work happening behind the scenes gave me an even deeper appreciation for the people caring for families during some of life’s most vulnerable and important moments.

Personally, today was also special because I completed my NRP 9th Edition Advanced Provider skills training and certification. As a doula, I hope I never need to use many of those skills, but I believe knowledge builds confidence. The more I understand about newborn care, emergency response, and what is happening in those critical moments, the better I can support, educate, and guide my clients when they need a calm presence beside them.

I left feeling grateful.

Grateful for the conversations.

Grateful for the collaboration.

Grateful for the opportunity to continue learning.

And grateful to be part of a community that is working toward making birth safer, more connected, and more supportive for the families we serve.

A huge thank you to Nichole Shockley and the Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children team for creating such a meaningful day. We are grateful to have been included and are excited to see where these relationships continue to grow.

Luke Knox Bivens, you took your sweet time…and every single hour was worth it. 🤍

Caroline and Nathan’s journey to meeting their boy began Tuesday evening with some early signs that things were starting to move. By Wednesday morning, it was clear…it was time to head in.

What followed was a long, beautiful, hard road. Pitocin. Pumping. Position changes. Hours of waiting and watching and trusting the process. By the time I got the text that Caroline was ready for extra support, I was already grabbing my bag.

When I walked in that evening, she was standing over the chair, breathing through contractions that the monitor couldn’t even fully capture. We moved through position after position — her body working so hard, doing exactly what it was made to do. She was stronger than she knew.

She labored through the night with so much grace and grit. When her body needed rest, she made the call for an epidural …and that rest is exactly what allowed her to finish the work. By early morning she was nearly complete. Pushing started at 4:50am.

And at 7:29am on May 14th — after nearly two full days — Luke Knox arrived. 7lbs 1oz, 20.25 inches of pure perfection.

He needed a little help breathing at first, but by 8:45 he was back in his mama’s arms, and by 9am he was latched and thriving.

Caroline, you were made for this. Nathan, you never left her side. It was an honor to witness every hard, holy moment of it.

Welcome to the world, sweet Luke. You are already loved so much. 🩵
