One of the most common questions I get is:

"Do you do dry needling?"

Yes.

But I think the more important question is:

"When should dry needling be part of the plan?"

Here's my answer:

When it helps you move better.

When it decreases pain enough that you can train more effectively.

When it gives us an opportunity to build strength and confidence.

Notice what isn't on that list:

❌ Fixing the root cause.
❌ Healing damaged tissue.
❌ Replacing exercise.

As a physical therapist, I don't measure success by whether someone feels amazing for the next 24 hours.

I measure success by whether they're squatting more confidently six weeks later.

That's why I never want treatments like dry needling to become the destination.

They're a bridge.

A bridge from pain...

To movement.

To strength.

To trusting your body again.

Because the goal isn't to leave every session feeling temporarily better.

The goal is to leave treatment knowing your body is becoming more capable.

One of my biggest goals as a physical therapist is to work myself out of a job.

Not because I don't love what I do. But because I want every athlete who walks through my doors to leave with something more valuable than pain relief.

I want them to leave with confidence.

Confidence to train.
Confidence to modify when needed.
Confidence to know that one bad workout doesn't erase months of progress.

Confidence to trust their body instead of fearing every ache and pain.Because the goal was never to create someone who depends on me. The goal is to create someone who believes in themselves again.

That's what good rehab should do.

Not just fix pain.
Build resilient athletes.

One of the most common questions I get from lifters is:

"Should I keep training if it hurts?"

Unfortunately, social media tends to give two extreme answers:

🚫 "Pain means stop immediately."

OR

💪 "No pain, no gain."

The truth? Neither is helpful.

Pain is information—not a stop sign.

As a physical therapist, I don't make recommendations based solely on whether something hurts. I'm looking at the entire picture.

✔️ How intense is the pain?

✔️ Does it change the way you move?

✔️ How long do symptoms stick around afterward?

✔️ Is your body adapting over time?

These questions tell me far more than a pain score ever could.

That's why I use a traffic light system with many of my athletes.

🟢 Green Light: Mild symptoms that settle quickly? Keep training.

🟡 Yellow Light: Symptoms are increasing or changing your movement? Adjust the plan—not abandon it.

🔴 Red Light: Significant pain, instability, swelling, or loss of strength? That's when it's time to hit pause and get evaluated.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is athletes bouncing between complete rest and going full send.

Recovery rarely happens at either extreme.

It happens in the middle.

It happens by finding the right dose of movement that challenges your body enough to adapt—but not so much that you overwhelm it.

That's what progressive rehab is all about.

Somehow I got a doctorate so I could legally tell grown adults to pick things up and put them back down. 🏋️

Most people think PT is:
Stretch → band exercise → ice → hope for the best

Meanwhile, my actual job looks more like:

• Convincing athletes they're not broken
• Watching people squat from 7 different angles
• Making people do manual labor under supervision
• Saying "do it again" at least 47 times per day
• Explaining that resting forever is not a treatment plan

And somehow... it works.

Because the goal isn't getting good at rehab exercises.

The goal is getting back to training without spending the entire workout wondering:

"Is this going to flare up?"

Now for the important question...

What's the ONE movement that immediately makes you think:

"Yeah... my body doesn't love that one."

If you've been dealing with knee pain while lifting, you've probably done one of these:

❌ Cut your squat depth

❌ Shift weight to your "good" side

❌ Skip leg day altogether

❌ Tell yourself it'll go away if you just rest long enough

The problem?

None of those things actually prepare your knee for what you're asking it to do.

Because your goal isn't to become really good at avoiding pain.

Your goal is to squat heavy again.

To hit depth without thinking about your knee.

To stop wondering if today's training session is going to flare things up.

That's why I love split squats for lifters.

Not because they're a magical exercise.

But because they allow us to gradually reload the positions that many athletes stop trusting.

We can:
✔️ Build quad strength
✔️ Improve tolerance to deeper knee angles
✔️ Load one side at a time
✔️ Progress back toward squatting with confidence

Most lifters don't need less loading.

They need the right loading.

Because the goal isn't a perfect split squat.

The goal is walking into the gym, seeing squats on the whiteboard, and not immediately thinking:

"How am I going to modify this today?"
