I think this is one of the messages I wish I had understood most as a first-time mom going into labor. I thought things were supposed to look and progress a certain way. And while labor often follows certain patterns, no two labors are the same.
So many factors influence how labor progresses: Is this your first baby or have you given birth before? Do you feel afraid, or do you feel safe, loved, and seen? Do you trust the process, or are you in the dark about what your body and baby are doing?
Yes, sometimes stalls or irregularities can signal that something is off — this is where your intuition comes in as well as a good support team. There are tools we can use to support progress, like positioning, rest, hydration, and nutrition. But sometimes, nothing is wrong at all. It’s just that birth is not a linear event.
Knowing this — and preparing for possible detours along the way — can set you up for a better experience in the moment.
Birth isn’t linear, but with the right preparation, you can feel confident no matter what path it takes. Comment your due month below and let’s chat about how to get you ready for all that may unfold.
