To every HG patient who has ever been told it wasn’t that bad… we believe you!

Hyperemesis gravidarum isn’t morning sickness. It’s a severe, potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that affects 3% of pregnancies. For too long, women have been dismissed, undertreated, and told it was all in their heads. Believing them is where good care begins.

At The HG and Morning Sickness Clinic, that belief is the foundation of everything we do.

It is HG Awareness Month! This week Dr Housholder will be at the International Colloquium on Hyperemesis Gravidarum (ICHG) in Norway presenting on the use of mirtazapine and olanzapine for HG. These are two underutilized medication options that can make a real difference for women who haven’t responded to first-line treatment. The science is advancing. The standard of care can too.

The HER Foundation has been the backbone of the HG community for over two decades. Kimber MacGibbon, MS, RN has led the foundation and worked tirelessly funding research, connecting families, and fighting for women to be heard.

If this cause resonates with you, please consider a donation to the HER Foundation.

Yellowhammer Fund is the first organization that partnered with us to help make this care accessible to anyone who needs it 🥹 They GET it and understand the need and level of suffering that HG patients endure. We are grateful for this partnership and for all the patients who will have access to care.

Dr Housholder and Dr Fejzo are making strides with HG Research! Their abstract on two medications that are really helping HG patients was published in the SMFM Pregancy Journal 🎉

In a retrospective chart review conducted at The HG & Morning Sickness Clinic, which treated ~1300 HG patients over 3 years, researchers evaluated the effectiveness of off-label mirtazapine and olanzapine for managing Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) in patients unresponsive to standard therapies.

Outcomes were assessed using HELP and PUQE scores, vomiting frequency, and weight change at follow-up.

This research was presented as a poster presentation at the SMFM conference in early 2026.

The HyperEmesis Level Prediction Score is a validated tool that has become the gold standard for assessing HG. Developed by the HER Foundation, this highly sensitive tool quantifies HG symptoms into a score that can be trended over time to monitor progress and response to treatment.
