Trigger Warning‼️
A woman reached out to me today and asked whether suicidal ideation, emotional numbness, depression, and anxiety can be connected to perimenopause and menopause.
The answer is yes. Hormonal changes during this transition can significantly affect mood, leaving some women feeling anxious, disconnected, hopeless, or simply unlike themselves. Hormone therapy may provide relief for some women when it is medically appropriate, but mental health symptoms—especially suicidal thoughts—should never be dismissed as “just hormones” or something you have to endure.
There is hope, and help is available. If these feelings are new, worsening, interfering with daily life, or making it difficult to feel safe, please reach out to both a mental health professional and your medical provider. Support may include therapy, a medical evaluation, medication, hormone therapy, or a combination of treatments.
If you are having suicidal thoughts, have developed a plan, or do not feel that you can keep yourself safe, please do not stay alone:
• Call or text 988 for the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline
• Call the Mental Health Association of Frederick County’s 24-hour hotline at 301-662-2255
• Visit the 24/7 Walk-In Crisis Care Center at 340 Montevue Lane, Frederick, MD 21702—no appointment is necessary, and services are available at no cost
• If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department
You do not have to wait until things feel unbearable to ask for help. You are not a burden, you are not alone, and you deserve support
