Celebrating the Power of Art, Community, and Compassion ✨🎨

We were proud to host a special Loaned Art Program Celebration honoring the talented artists, dedicated volunteers, and valued community partners who help make our healing environment possible.

The program allows beautiful artwork to fill our halls, bringing moments of comfort, inspiration, and hope to patients, families, and team members each day.

A routine dental exam changed Dave Knight's life. At 43, the anatomy and physiology professor was diagnosed with stage 4 tongue cancer.

After a 14-hour surgery and a long recovery, Dave found something unexpected alongside healing: a new purpose.

Inspired by the nurses who cared for him during his most vulnerable moments, he's now preparing to begin nursing school while continuing to teach full time.

"They gave me my second chance. Now I have the energy and drive to pay it forward and be the difference for someone else."

🎉 Celebrating Our Incredible Team and 6 Years of Impact at Sentara Brock Cancer Center! 🎉

Recently, team members gathered for a special Employee Appreciation Ceremony that not only recognized the dedication, compassion, and excellence of our staff, but also celebrated the 6th anniversary of Sentara Brock Cancer Center.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Gratitude Award by Medical Director, Dr. Thomas Alberico to Anglice Hollins, medical assistant with Sentara Supportive Care Services. Anglice was recognized for her outstanding commitment to patients, colleagues, and the mission of delivering exceptional care. Congratulations, Anglice, on this well-deserved honor! 💙

The ceremony also featured inspiring remarks from Joan Brock, philanthropist and cancer survivor, who shared her appreciation for the remarkable work being done across our cancer care teams.

A special thank you to Mister Softee for providing delicious ice cream that helped make the day even more memorable.

A splash of color, hope, and kindness has found a home in our Healing Garden. 💙🌼🪨

Recently, the Livestrong Club at Norfolk Academy visited Sentara Brock Cancer Center and donated beautifully hand-painted rocks to brighten this special space. Each rock is designed to offer encouragement, inspiration, and healing for our patients, visitors, and team members.

When Benjamin Goldberg was going through cancer treatment as a little boy, his mom Wendy noticed something. On the days that included dance therapy or meditation, the anxiety lifted — and everything went better.

Benjamin passed away at age 8. But what Wendy witnessed never left her.

When she was diagnosed with a stage 4 cancer herself, Wendy believes the combination of traditional treatments and non-clinical activities saved her life.

“I had less than a 30% chance to survive 5 years ago, and now I have no cancer,” she said. “So, I do believe that the integration of non-medical interventions truly works.”

Now, through the Benjamin Goldberg Foundation, she's partnering with Sentara on one of the 1st studies in the U.S. to formally examine how art and music therapy affect cancer patients — including whether those interventions reduce the need for hospital services. The hope is that the data will help expand social and financial support for these activities.

A powerful day for women’s health in Virginia Beach! 🌸

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Her Health Summit, a free, multi‑generational event focused on breast and gynecological health across every season of life.

The impact was undeniable: 50 attendees, 89 total participants and 85+ screenings completed, including breast, colon, and bone density. Attendees called it “highly meaningful,” “truly amazing,” and said “no woman should miss this kind of FREE event.”

Thank you to our speakers. Thank you to Tidewater Community College for hosting. And thank you to the 24 resource vendors who participated, connecting attendees with local women's cancer support groups, local health professionals and leaders of women's health and cancer research programs.

We’re grateful for the shared learning, the powerful conversations, and strong turnout — and we’re already looking ahead to next year! 💪

For the second year in a row, the Crush Cancer Hampton Roads Cycle for Survival spokesperson has had deep Sentara roots — and that’s not a coincidence.

This year’s ambassador, Kevin Johnson, was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer and launched the Man Up to Cancer support group at Sentara Brock Cancer Center after he saw a gap in support for men facing cancer.

Last year’s ambassador, eight-year-old Emily Buck, was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer. Her mother, Carrie, has been a dedicated Sentara nurse for years, caring for families across our community.

Two years. Two spokespeople. Two stories tied to Sentara.

All fueling the nation’s most successful fundraising event for rare cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
