Sometimes the best view is the one you close your eyes to.

A client recently asked us to build his sauna with just one small porthole window.

Traditionally, many Finnish saunas had little or no glass. Partly because early windows weren’t great insulators, but also because a darker sauna creates a different experience. Your attention shifts from the view to the warmth, the steam, and the quiet.

Some people want to connect with the landscape. Others want to disconnect from the outside world and turn inward.

Modern insulated windows have given us incredible design freedom, but the purpose of the sauna hasn’t changed.

Build a space that helps you slow down. A place to breathe deeply, sweat, quiet the mind, and return to the rest of your life feeling a little more grounded.

Whether that’s surrounded by glass or wrapped in cedar is entirely up to you.

The Fox and the Owl. This meticulously hand built 7’ x 7’ x 9’ PNW Classic with a panoramic window, clear cedar inside and out, and a fox and owl theme, was delivered to Kevin in Bend, Oregon this week. It has a Yakisugi finish, blonde accents, and a Starlight package with actual constellations in it - the Big Dipper and Vulpecula!
