Although there is an ongoing Cyclospora outbreak, it is still important to include fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet. Taking a few extra precautions can help reduce your risk of infection while continuing to enjoy your daily produce.

Food Safety Tips:
• Choose whole produce: Purchase whole heads of lettuce and intact fruits and vegetables instead of pre-bagged or pre-cut varieties whenever possible.
• Cook when possible: Heat destroys the Cyclospora parasite. Cooking produce to an internal temperature of at least 158°F (70°C) can make it safe to eat.
• Wash thoroughly: Rinse and scrub firm-skinned produce, such as cucumbers and melons, with a clean produce brush before cutting. Keep in mind that washing may reduce contamination but cannot fully guarantee removal of the parasite.
• Stay informed: Monitor current outbreak information and food recalls, and avoid consuming products that have been recalled or linked to Cyclospora infections.

Remember, fruits and vegetables remain an essential part of a healthy diet. Following these food safety practices can help you enjoy their benefits while reducing your risk of illness.

If you have any questions about food safety or nutrition concerns, please reach out to Oneida Nutrition Services at 920-869-4829.
