The incidence of gallstones is on the rise globally. A diet high in fried foods, trans fats, hydrogenated oils, dairy, sugar, and refined carbohydrates may contribute to their formation.
In a laboratory study, researchers investigated the litholytic properties of various citrus essential oils—clementine, bitter orange, sweet orange, and grapefruit—compared to methyl tertbutyl ether (MTBE), a common agent used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones. All the citrus oils demonstrated significant effectiveness in degrading gallstones, with sweet orange showing exceptional litholytic activity after just one day, achieving a dissolution capacity of 95.8%. Clementine followed closely at 94.8%, and bitter orange at 93.0%, all surpassing MTBE's efficacy. Grapefruit, however, was less effective, with a dissolution capacity of 87.7%. Notably, isolated limonene and linalool also exhibited strong litholytic activity, exceeding that of MTBE. These findings suggest that citrus essential oils may offer a promising natural remedy for cholesterol gallstones.
