A lawsuit filed yesterday in Wake County challenges NC's physician collaborative practice requirements for nurse practitioners. NCMS opposes this effort to change how medicine is practiced through the courts instead of the legislature.

Patient safety is our top priority. Physician-led collaboration means better, safer, more coordinated care for patients across NC. 💙

We're watching this case closely and building a coalition with other specialty groups to ensure the physician community remains actively involved in the case.

Episode 7 of the Political Pulse Podcast is now live: Congressman Don Davis Talks Rural Health Care and Access.

Access is the core. Congressman Davis pointed to stark health disparities across Eastern North Carolina “from birth to death,” and framed the region’s rural hospital closures, including Martin General, as a systemic problem, not isolated incidents.

Martin General as a national model. He highlighted the effort to reopen Martin General as a Rural Emergency Hospital (the first fully closed U.S. hospital to reopen under that designation!), calling it a blueprint other rural communities could follow.

Workforce is the other half of access. Davis pointed to ECU’s Brody School of Medicine “grow your own” model and training local students who are more likely to stay and practice in the communities they came from as key to solving the provider shortage.

Cost requires looking past insurance. He argued Congress needs to address the underlying price of care through transparency and drug policy, while voicing concern over HR 1’s Medicaid cuts and provider tax cap, and favoring targeted ACA reform over repeal.

A call to engage. Citing Medicaid expansion (95,000+ Eastern NC residents covered) as one of his proudest policy wins, and pointing to the bipartisan For Country Caucus as proof cooperation is possible, Davis closed with a direct ask: constituents should call, show up, and get involved through professional associations.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has selected Health Quality Innovators (HQI) as the Quality Innovation Network–Quality Improvement Organization (QIN‑QIO) serving North Carolina.

Through targeted quality improvement support, data‑driven performance insights and practice‑level technical assistance, HQI helps practices improve quality scores, reduce avoidable utilization, strengthen care coordination and address gaps that affect patient outcomes.

HQI’s work is designed to complement existing payer and Accountable Care Organization (ACO) efforts while helping practices build the infrastructure and capabilities needed to improve patients’ lives.

The enrollment window closes August 27, sign up now to secure your spot. Organizations can receive QIN‑QIO services by completing a brief Provider Service Agreement. Once the agreement is received, a member of the HQI team will follow up with next steps.
