As of September 1st, I’m officially on sabbatical. 🤍

For now, my calendar looks a little different: more rest, more recharging, more fresh air, more adventures, and plenty of miles alongside my two favorite guys—Chris & Lenny. 🐾🌲☀️

After many years of pouring so much of myself into caring for others, I’m giving myself permission to simply be, breathe, wander, and see what comes next.

I’ll keep this page updated if and when the next professional chapter begins. Until then, you’ll probably find me somewhere outside making memories with the people (and pup) I love most. 💛

Be well. Be loved. And take good care of each other.

Today I closed the door on a chapter that has held more than seven years of my life. 🤍

To every patient who trusted me with your care, shared your stories with me, laughed with me, cried with me, and allowed me the privilege of being a small part of your life—thank you. I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to everyone, but please know that I carry so much love and gratitude for each and every one of you.

And to my team—the people who became friends, family, sounding boards, cheerleaders, and some of the very best parts of my days—thank you for more love, laughter, kindness, and memories than I could ever fit into one post. What a chapter this has been.

For the first time in a very long time, I don’t have the next chapter completely mapped out…and I think I’m okay with that. For the next few months, I’m going to rest, breathe, find my way back to myself, and trust that the right adventure will find me when it’s time.

Until then, Lenny and I have about a thousand adventures to take, naps to enjoy, places to wander, and cuddles to catch up on. 🐾🤎

Thank you, Black Hills Dermatology. And most of all, thank you to every person who made these seven years something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Here’s to the end of one beautiful chapter…and whatever comes next. ✨

Apparently the only appropriate way to say goodbye after years together is Golden Girls style: cake, laughs, hugs… and a note on my chair that said “Eat dirt and die, trash.” 😂💗

Katie’s last day is today, mine is Tuesday, so the Spearfish crew threw us one last party together — equal parts inappropriate and ridiculously sweet.

I’ve laughed with these people, leaned on them, survived some wild days with them, and loved being part of this little crew. Saying goodbye is hard when the people are the part you don’t want to leave.

How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. 🩷

To my dear patients,

After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision that August 26th will be my final day at Black Hills Dermatology.

There are moments in life when your heart tells you it is time to step toward a new chapter. This decision has not been easy, but I know it is the right one.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Thank you for trusting me with your health, your stories, your fears, and your triumphs. Being invited into your lives has been one of the greatest honors of my career, and I will carry each of you with me.

Nearly 30 years ago, I entered healthcare not in search of a job, but in answer to a calling. That calling has never changed.

As I have grown as a clinician, I have realized that while caring for one patient at a time has been an extraordinary privilege, I also feel called to help improve healthcare on a broader scale. I hope to contribute to the future of medicine through innovation, biomedical research, artificial intelligence, and health policy—bringing the voice of patients into the rooms where important decisions are made.

My mission has always been to see people cared for with dignity, compassion, and humanity. That mission remains unchanged. If anything, it has only grown stronger.

Please know that I leave with nothing but respect and gratitude for Dr. Young and the entire team. I have full confidence that you will continue to be in excellent hands.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives.

This is not the end of my calling—only the beginning of a new chapter within it.

Is it cancer? The short answer is not normally but some can develop into a cancer. Those tiny, rough rings on the arms and legs may not be “just dry skin.” 👀

Disseminated superficial porokeratosis is a chronic skin condition that causes multiple thin, scaly, ring-shaped spots with a slightly raised border. It often appears on sun-exposed areas, can run in families, and may become more noticeable with age or UV exposure.

The good news: it is not contagious.
The less-fun news: it can be stubborn, and regular lotion usually will not make it disappear. 😅

Daily sunscreen and routine skin checks are important because a small number of lesions can develop precancerous or cancerous changes. Call your dermatology provider if a spot becomes thicker, painful, tender, itchy, bleeds, or changes quickly.
