🎒 School is back in session and now that the first-day excitement is settling down, parents may start noticing something else:
How is your child communicating at school? 💬
The classroom places a lot of new demands on communication. Children are expected to:
✨ Follow multi-step directions
✨ Ask teachers for help
✨ Answer questions
✨ Tell stories about what happened
✨ Learn new classroom vocabulary
✨ Join conversations and activities
✨ Navigate friendships
✨ Speak up when they’re confused, uncomfortable, or need a break
For some children, the first few weeks back at school can make speech or language challenges easier to notice...especially when they’re communicating with new teachers & classmates.
A few things to listen for at home:
🌷Is your child able to tell you what happened during their day?
🌷Can they explain when something went wrong?
🌷Do they know what to say when they don’t understand a direction?
🌷Are they frequently frustrated because others don’t understand them?
🌷Are they avoiding talking about school or participating with peers?
💕One of our favorite tips: instead of asking only “How was school?”, try something more specific:
“What made you laugh today?”
“Was anything confusing?”
“Who did you talk to?”
“What was something new you learned?”
“Did you need help with anything?”
Those little conversations can tell you a lot. 🫶
And remember: children don’t need perfect speech or instant confidence to succeed at school. They need meaningful ways to communicate, supportive adults who listen and opportunities to feel heard & understood.
If the start of the school year has raised questions about your child’s speech, language, fluency, social communication, or communication confidence, tuLIPS Speech Therapy is here to help.
