Here's why it matters: If VA approves your claim, the effective date can affect the period for which you may be eligible for retroactive benefits.

A few important things to know:
▪️ An Intent to File generally gives you one year to complete the applicable claim.
▪️ It doesn't guarantee approval or retroactive compensation.
▪️ If you start an eligible disability compensation application online through a verified VA.gov account, your intent to file may be recorded automatically.
▪️ An Intent to File is not a substitute for submitting your completed claim.

This is one of the questions we hear often - and the answer isn't simply yes or no.

Social Security considers your work activity and earnings when evaluating whether you meet the definition of disability. In 2026, earnings averaging more than $1,690 per month generally meet the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) level for a person who is not blind.

There are important exceptions and different rules that may apply depending on your circumstances.

A VA denial can be frustrating, but a denial doesn't necessarily mean the process is over.

Depending on the circumstances of your claim and the reason for the denial, you may have options for seeking further review, including Higher-Levell Review, Supplemental Claim, or appeal to the Board of Veterans' Appeals.
