Muscle-Sparing Subvastus Knee Replacement in Traverse City at Great Lakes Orthopaedic Center.

Protecting the quadriceps. Preserving muscle. Helping patients recover faster.

Unlike traditional knee replacement techniques that cut through the quadriceps tendon or muscle, the Subvastus Approach allows access beneath the quadriceps, preserving the extensor mechanism. Combined with robotic-assisted planning and precise implant positioning, this approach is designed to reduce surgical trauma while supporting a faster recovery.

Am I a candidate?

Most patients undergoing primary knee replacement are potential candidates, although prior surgeries, deformity, body habitus, and other factors may influence the safest surgical approach.

Is recovery faster?

Many studies have demonstrated improved early recovery, less postoperative pain, improved early range of motion, and earlier return of quadriceps function with muscle-sparing approaches. Individual recovery varies depending on overall health, rehabilitation, and surgical complexity.

Do you use robotic technology?

Yes. Robotic assistance helps optimize implant positioning, alignment, and surgical precision while complementing a muscle-sparing surgical technique.

Robotic Assisted Knee Replacement through a Muscle Sparing Subvastus Approach:

-Improved balance
-Less soft tissue dissection
-Faster Recovery

What is the subvastus approach?

It is a muscle sparing, minimally traumatic approach to
knee replacement surgery. This eliminates the need to cut
through the quadriceps tendon in traditional total knee
arthroplasty, by entering the knee underneath the vastus
medialis without damaging the muscles or tendons.

What are the advantages?

Muscle sparing total replacement can lead to less postoperative pain, faster recovery, and improved early range
of motion compared to traditional techniques.

Why use robotic assistance?

Robotic assistance allows precise measurements to be
obtained during surgery, which are then used to create a
computer generated model of your knee in real time. This
allows your surgeon to make more precise bone cuts and
improve your knee’s balance with less soft tissue release.
