Cooler weather, lower humidity and indoor heating can bring more than falling leaves. For some people, fall means dry or cracked skin, eczema flare-ups, irritated nasal passages, seasonal congestion, sore throats and lingering coughs.

When a standard product isn’t the right fit, our compounding pharmacy can work with your healthcare provider to prepare patient-specific options such as:
• Customized topical preparations for dry, irritated or eczema-prone skin
• Nasal or sinus preparations for seasonal congestion and irritation
• Alcohol-free or sugar-free liquid options for cough and throat discomfort

If seasonal changes are affecting your skin or respiratory health, talk with your healthcare provider. A compounded prescription may offer a more personalized way to address your needs this fall.

What does gut health have to do with autoimmune conditions?

Research continues to explore the connection between the gut microbiome, the intestinal lining and immune-system activity. An imbalanced microbiome or compromised gut barrier may be associated with inflammation and could play a role in some autoimmune conditions.

Supporting gut health may be one part of a broader, individualized care plan, but it is not a replacement for medical treatment. If you are experiencing autoimmune symptoms, talk with your provider about appropriate testing and next steps. Our team is available to discuss customized medications or nutritional supplement support.

No fleas, but your dog is still itching? 🐶

Excessive scratching, licking or chewing can have many possible causes, including:
• Seasonal or food allergies
• Dry skin or contact irritation
• Bacterial or yeast infections
• Ear infections
• Mites, insect bites or other parasites

And even if you don’t see fleas, one bite may be enough to trigger an allergic reaction in a sensitive dog.

If the itching persists or is accompanied by redness, hair loss, odor, sores or discharge, schedule a visit with your veterinarian. Identifying the underlying cause is the first step toward finding appropriate relief.

When medication is needed, our compounding pharmacy may be able to prepare a customized dosage form that is easier to give or apply.

New research is adding to the conversation about menopause, hormone therapy and heart health.

In a recent observational study of 2,737 women experiencing hot flashes or night sweats, starting menopausal hormone therapy was associated with an estimated 22% lower risk of cardiovascular events. The potential benefit was more pronounced among women who began therapy within 10 years of menopause onset.

However, researchers emphasized that hormone therapy should not be used specifically to prevent cardiovascular disease. The decision should be based on each woman’s symptoms, health history, and individual risks.

Talk with your healthcare provider and our compounding pharmacist about whether menopausal hormone therapy may be appropriate for you.

Women facing breast cancer deserve care tailored to their individual needs. While we do not treat breast cancer, our compounding pharmacy may support patients by preparing medications that help address certain treatment-related challenges.

Examples may include:
- Customized oral rinses for mouth discomfort
- Liquid or alternative dosage forms for individuals who have difficulty swallowing
- Anti-nausea medications in an alternative dosage form when vomiting or difficulty swallowing makes tablets hard to take
- Topical preparations prescribed for localized nerve pain or sensitivity
- Preparations for treatment-related skin irritation

Ask your healthcare provider whether a patient-specific compounded medication could help meet your supportive-care needs.

Having trouble finding your usual estradiol patch?

The FDA has acknowledged access challenges related to increased demand, and availability may vary by product, pharmacy, and location. While estradiol patches are still available, inconsistent supply can create frustrating delays for women who rely on hormone therapy.

If you are affected by the estradiol patch shortage, a patient-specific compounded estradiol cream may be another option. Our pharmacists can work with you and your provider to explore an appropriate compounded alternative based on your individual needs.

Brown or gray-brown patches across the cheeks, forehead, nose or upper lip may be a sign of melasma, a common form of skin discoloration.

While melasma doesn’t have one clear cause, several factors may contribute, including:
- Sun and UV exposure
- Certain medications
- Family history
- Hormonal changes

Because several factors can affect skin pigmentation, a dermatologist or other qualified healthcare provider can evaluate your discoloration and help determine appropriate next steps. Talk to our pharmacist about topical options and their potential role in addressing pigmentation.

Giving medication to a child isn’t always easy, especially when pills are difficult to swallow or liquid medications have an unpleasant taste.

Pediatric compounding can help by creating customized medications in strengths, flavors, and dosage forms designed around a child’s individual needs.

Depending on the prescription, compounding may allow for options such as:
• Flavored liquid suspensions
• Smoother textures for children with sensory sensitivities
• Customized strengths based on age or weight
• Alternative dosage forms when standard pills aren’t a good fit
• Formulations that take certain allergies or ingredient sensitivities into consideration

Our compounding pharmacists work closely with pediatric providers to help make medications easier for children to take and less stressful for families.

Mental health care isn’t always one-size-fits-all.

For some people living with depression, symptoms such as persistent low mood, fatigue, brain fog, or low motivation may continue even after trying standard treatment approaches. In these situations, a healthcare provider may explore more individualized options.

Compounding can support personalized care by allowing pharmacists to prepare patient-specific strengths and alternative dosage forms based on a provider’s prescription and an individual patient’s needs.

Our compounding pharmacists work alongside patients and healthcare providers to help support customized treatment plans and answer questions along the way.

Have questions about how compounding may fit into mental health care? Talk with our pharmacy team to learn more.
