After 15 long years, the American Academy of Pediatrics has released updated clinical guidelines (July 2026) on how to screen, treat, and monitor children with iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia—and it's a gamechanger. References are given at the end of the blogs. Thank you!!

📊 Did you know?
• Iron deficiency anemia affects about 3–4% of children in the U.S.
• Iron deficiency alone impacts nearly 15% of kids (United States).

But here's the real concern—even mild iron deficiency can affect brain development before it’s effect on blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. And the effects on cognition and learning can linger even after iron levels are restored. That's why early screening is so vital—it gives every child a fair shot at reaching their full potential.

Vulnerable Demographic Breakdown (NFHS-5 Data)
• Children (6–59 months): 67.1% prevalence
• Adolescent Girls (15–19 years): 59.1% prevalence
