Over the weekend I went to float therapy.
Float therapy is often marketed as "calm", "relaxing", "effortless surrender" or dare I say, "bliss".
There is also more research building about it's support with reducing stress, anxiety, depression and PTSD symptoms and even helping those with chronic pain.
Instead though… I felt overstimulated.
The silence felt loud.
The weightlessness felt unfamiliar.
My body didn’t melt — it braced.
And here’s what I want to say, especially to the women I work with:
This is not failure.
This is a nervous system doing its job.
When something feels unfamiliar or uncontained (particularly if there has been a cumulation of stressors beforehand), even if it’s meant to be “relaxing,” our system can interpret it as unsafe.
In that moment floating, for me, felt too boundary-less at first. Too close to dissociation for my liking.
Cue: window of tolerance awareness (unsure what that is, head to my pinned post 📌)
So instead of forcing myself to relax, I made some different choices.
🌿I chose a combination of music and silence for my treatment
🌿 I pressed my hands and feet into the corners of the bath.
🌿 I created edges by sitting rather than laying down
🌿 I stretched gently
🌿 I slowed my exhale
I gave my body containment before asking it to surrender to weightlessness.
And in the final 10 minutes… something shifted.
Not because I overrode myself.
But because I built safety first.
This is the work.
We don’t command calm.
We create the conditions for it.
So if you’ve ever tried to meditate, rest, float, or “just relax” and found yourself more activated — please know:
You may not need more discipline.
You may need more containment.
Safety before surrender.
Edges before expansion. 🌻
Your nervous system isn’t a problem to fix.
It’s a relationship to build 🌿
This is the work I am SO passionate about here at MC - the intersection between nervous system support, relational dynamics and identity development.
