Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, SAC honours residential school Survivors, remembers the children who never returned home, as well as their families and communities. We acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonial policies on First Nations, Indigenous, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
As a national association representing communication health professionals, we recognize that language, culture, identity, and connection are deeply linked. We also recognize the importance of Indigenous-led efforts to preserve and revitalize Indigenous languages.
At SAC, reconciliation is not just about words – it's about action. Through our advocacy, especially around Jordan’s Principle, we strive to ensure Indigenous children have equitable access to speech, language, and hearing services. While we know that barriers persist, we remain committed to advancing reconciliation by improving access to equitable care.
Meaningful reconciliation requires ongoing learning, listening, and reflection. We encourage our community to take time today to engage with Indigenous voices, stories, and educational resources.
