September is Organic Month! 🍓

To celebrate Choose Canada Organic has a range of online educational and celebrational events taking place, including: Organic Myth Busters (Sept. 16), a film screening of "Evolution of Organic" (Sept. 13-19) and a panel celebrating women farmers in Canada (Sept. 23).

We'll also be sharing some facts about the impact of organic farming, kicking off with some stats about soil and environmental health.

At Steep Hill, we do our best to bring in organic products, including all of our bulk dry goods (flour, oats, beans, lentils, seeds, etc.), our spices, most of our produce (what isn't certified is grown locally), our frozen fruit, and a huge range of other dried and shelf stable goods and snacks.

Calling all Steep Hill volunteers! 📣We're lending the Broadway District a helping hand with recycling and bottle collection for this year's Street Fair - which brings thousands of visitors to Broadway and area. Volunteer for two hours and you'll receive an additional 3% discount on all purchases for the following month. Volunteer for four hours and you'll receive the discount for the following two months.

To sign-up, simply send our organizing board member, Louise, an e-mail at [email protected] and she'll get you all set up!

For those interested, we're specifically looking for folks to help with bottle collection during the day. All bottles collected will be taken to SARCAN and Steep Hill will be able to collect those funds for ourselves! This is also an opportunity to chat with attendees about Steep Hill and let them know there is, in fact, a grocery store on Broadway. A win-win-win if we ever heard one! 🙌

Make sure you're able to take advantage of every minute by grabbing your groceries early!

We've got you covered with local strawberries, lettuce from Grassroots Vertical Farm , yellow onions and hot peppers from Our Farm, tasty microgreens from Grassland Greens, mini cucumbers and basil from Floating Gardens, eggs from Prairie SunRise, fresh new potatoes and beets from Carmanna Acres, yellow and green beans and carrots from Simpkins Market Garden, and much, much more! 🛒

We know how hard it can be juggling all the costs of university: classes, textbooks, rent, groceries, etc. and Steep Hill has partnered with the USSU - U of S Students' Union to give a discount on our student memberships.

Until Oct. 31, a student membership will cost $10 - simply show your student ID when you're signing up and you're good to go! Memberships at Steep Hill include a 3% discount on every purchase (6% for two hours/month of volunteering), 10% discount on bulk/special orders, and the opportunity to have your requested items brought into the store (if possible).

With a focus on providing an alternative to large corporate grocery stores, we've got pantry staples, fresh produce, eggs and dairy, snacks, and (almost) everything else you can think of.

Did you know....?

Twice a week a volunteer from the Riversdale Community Fridge comes by to pick up produce and flats of water to take to members of our community who need it. So far this summer we've donated THIRTEEN (13!!) flats of water with help from our Steep Hill members and we've diverted many kilograms of produce that would have otherwise been composted.

If you're interested in donating a flat of water, please ask one of our staff members how to do so and we'll make sure it gets taken to the community fridge.

We're firmly clinging on to summer and what better way than by enjoying some golden, tender chanterelles? 🍄

We currently have lots in stock and they can be sautéed, steamed, pickled, gently roasted, and generally used however you'd use other mushrooms. If those aren't quite up your alley, we also have oyster, shiitake, white, and portabella mushrooms in stock!

Summer might be winding down but it's certainly not over and we've got sweet and juicy local strawberries to prove it! 🍓There are few things that say "summer!" quite like a handful of freshly rinsed strawberries eaten straight from the palm of your hand, too delicious to make it to a bowl. 😋

Please arrive early to ensure there is time for everyone to register before the call to order. Volunteers at the registration table will make sure your membership is up-to-date and give you a voting card. Bring your membership card if possible to help streamline registration. Each membership is entitled to one vote, so if you have a joint membership, please decide which person will be voting.

Members can stop in at the store ahead of time and check with staff to confirm the status of their membership ahead of time.
