Just in: researchers are using sheep wool ropes as a natural alternative to plastic ropes in kelp farming. 🌿 This innovation has the potential to keep 383 tonnes of plastic out of our oceans EVERY YEAR, reduce microplastics, and give wool a valuable new purpose. ♻️

🐑 Celebrating the Future of Saskatchewan’s Sheep Industry! 🎓

The Saskatchewan Sheep Breeders’ Association was proud to present the 2026 Colleen Sawyer Memorial Scholarships at the Grasslands Show and Sale.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients:

🌟 Paige Govan
🌟 Eli Bartlett

These three outstanding young people have each demonstrated a strong commitment to the sheep industry through exhibiting, volunteering, leadership, and community involvement. We are proud to support them as they continue their post-secondary education and wish them every success in their future endeavours.

We would also like to recognize Colleen Sawyer, whose passion, leadership, and dedication to Saskatchewan’s sheep industry continue to inspire future generations through this scholarship.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who has contributed to the Colleen Sawyer Memorial Scholarship Fund over the years. Whether you have donated directly, volunteered your time, or generously supported our Scholarship Auctions at Grasslands and Canadian Western Agribition, you have helped make opportunities like this possible.

As we witnessed during this year’s Junior Show, the future of our industry has never looked brighter. It is because of the incredible support of our members, sponsors, buyers, and friends that we were able to award three scholarships this year.

🏆 2026 Grasslands Showmanship Winners 🐑

The Saskatchewan Sheep Breeders Association is proud to congratulate our outstanding 2026 Grasslands Show & Sale Showmanship winners!

🥇 Junior Showmanship – Kerri Ann Walker
🥇 Intermediate Showmanship – Emma Bigoraj
🥇 Senior Showmanship – Paige Govan

A special congratulations also goes to Paige Govan, recipient of the Rolly Bateman Overall Memorial Scholarship.

Rolly was a passionate mentor, advocate, and educator who dedicated countless hours to teaching youth the art of showmanship and sharing his love of the sheep industry. He exhibited at Grasslands for many years and was a tremendous supporter of the show. Thank you to Rolly’s friends for continuing to honour his legacy through this annual award, ensuring his passion for youth and the sheep industry lives on.

Selecting the Overall Showman was no easy task! Judge Glen Parker had the difficult job of choosing from an exceptional group of exhibitors. The level of competition was outstanding across every age division—even our Cloverbud impressed everyone with their enthusiasm and skills.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has made our Scholarship Fund such a tremendous success. Thank you to the generous donors who contributed items to the Scholarship Auction, the bidders who enthusiastically supported the sale, and the purchasers whose generosity continues to grow this program year after year. Your support is creating meaningful opportunities for the next generation of sheep producers.

We are especially excited to share that all three of this year’s Grasslands Showmanship winners, along with two of the three 2025 Canadian Western Agribition Scholarship recipients, used their sale credits to purchase purebred sheep and expand their flocks. This is exactly what the program was designed to do—invest in youth, encourage flock development, and strengthen the future of Saskatchewan’s sheep industry.

Congratulations once again to all of our winners, and thank you to everyone who continues to support and believe in our youth. The future of our industry is in great hands! 🐑👏
