"We're not really set up for that here."

Said about a hoist or a BSL interpreter or a double appointment. Usually in a tone that suggests the matter is closed and you're being difficult for still standing there.

You have the right to access NHS services, and you can't be refused on unreasonable grounds. Unreasonable covers most of what actually gets said: your condition is complicated, your needs take longer than the slot allows, you raised something once and it went badly.

Not being set up for you describes a problem the service has. It isn't grounds to turn you away. Separately from this right, the Equality Act requires services to make reasonable adjustments, which is worth naming out loud when you're being told no.

If you are refused, ask for the reason in writing.

Avi is our Communications (Disability) Intern, building resources for Disabled People's Organisations, mostly around the ongoing COVID Inquiry. She came to us from Special Needs education, and has lived experience of neurodivergence and of caring for Disabled family members. None of that is incidental to the job.

Outside work she's swimming, painting, or somewhere outdoors.

This one won't apply to most people. It matters a lot to the few it does.

You have the right to apply for authorization for planned treatment in the EU under the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement, if you meet the requirements.

The criteria are narrow and the paperwork is real. But if something you need isn't available here, the route exists, and it's a right rather than a favour.

Worth knowing about before you need it.

Ewura-Ama is our Community Management Officer, which undersells it slightly.

She writes the articles, blogs and press releases on the COVID Inquiry, contributes to what you see on this page, and keeps the Well Adapt, Disability Rights UK and DPO Forum websites current. She's also coordinating the publication of Covid Conversations, a book of Disabled people's experiences during the pandemic.

Outside work it's reading, crafts and Lego.

Somebody decided which services exist near you.

You have the right to expect your local NHS to assess what your community needs, and then commission services to meet those needs.

It's the least known right on this list and one of the most useful. If there's no accessible dentist, no wheelchair service, no clinic you can actually reach, that isn't bad luck. It's a commissioning decision somebody made.

In England the body making those decisions is your Integrated Care Board, and they can be asked what they based them on.

Nemo is Chief Interruption Officer, and he is extremely good at it.

He leads on attention reallocation and boundary enforcement. His work is shaped by a strong commitment to being petted during meetings and occupying other people's chairs. He can often be found asleep on the job.

Nobody has ever successfully explained to him that a meeting was important.

That's the pets. The humans start next week.

Everyone should get care that fits them. That isn't what a lot of disabled people get.

You have the right to care and treatment that is appropriate to you. Not to an average patient. To you.

That covers your needs and your preferences. How long the appointment needs to be. How information reaches you. What has already been tried and didn't work.

If what's on offer doesn't fit, saying so isn't being difficult. It's the standard the NHS is meant to meet.

Luna is Chief of Rest at Well Adapt.

Her responsibilities are lying down a lot and reminding people that rest and comfort are vital. She doesn't treat that as a small job, and neither do we.

Most of us had to learn how to rest properly. Luna never needed teaching.

We've never properly introduced our team. We're starting with the ones who don't do any work.

Dino is Chief Demolition Officer at Well Adapt. He leads on structural testing and the rapid decommissioning of cardboard, and holds a total disregard for the phrase "that was expensive". He can usually be found in the wreckage, unbothered.

Three more pets, then the humans.

Who's the colleague on your team who isn't technically staff?

What is Disabled Joy? And how do we create more of it?

Disabled Joy began as a solo artist commission with the Raze Collective.

The commission invited Georgia Bondy to explore joy not as something separate from disability, but as something deeply rooted within it. Not despite disability. Because of it. Through it.

That initial artistic exploration asked a simple but expansive question:

What is disabled joy?

From there, the work grew.

What started inside the studio became conversations, performances, and collective spaces. It evolved into a wider project led through Well Adapt, bringing disabled people together to reflect on pleasure, creativity, resistance, access, community and pride.

But at its core, the question remains unchanged.

Disabled Joy isn’t about ignoring barriers.

It’s about recognising the fullness of disabled life.

It’s about making space for pleasure, softness, celebration and imagination.

For now, we want to return to the beginning.

What does Disabled Joy mean to you?

Where do you experience it?

How do we create more of it together?

We’re sharing a call-out for disabled people to contribute reflections, voice notes and stories as part of the next chapter.

Because Disabled Joy started as an artistic question.

Now it’s a collective one.
