As the colder months creep closer, the groups have been thinking about the wildlife that calls Edge Woods home, and what we can do to give our woodland neighbours a helping hand through winter.
This weekโs animal in the spotlight was the mighty hedgehog. After plenty of research and discussion about where hedgehogs like to shelter, what makes them feel safe and how they cope through the colder months, the team got to work creating this brilliant little hideaway.
Using pipework to form a protected entrance, surrounded by branches, leaves and other natural materials from the Woods, theyโve created a sheltered space where a passing hedgehog can tuck itself away from the weather and disturbance. ๐ชต๐
It might look wonderfully wild; and that is exactly the point! Creating wildlife-friendly spaces is often about working with nature rather than tidying it away.
Another cracking example of the learning happening in Edge Woods: researching local wildlife, understanding its needs and then putting that knowledge into practice to make a real difference to the environment around us.
Now we just need to wait and see whether any spiky residents decide to move inโฆ ๐๐ฆ
