A healthy 23-year-old Waikato man has tragically died from meningococcal disease. What began as flu-like symptoms quickly became a life-threatening illness, leaving his family devastated. His parents have since shared his story in the hope that greater awareness may help prevent other families from experiencing the same loss.

Meningococcal disease can affect healthy children, teenagers and young adults, and symptoms can worsen rapidly. Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to help protect against the disease. In New Zealand, funded meningococcal vaccines are available for eligible young people aged 13–25 entering their first year in certain close-living environments such as boarding schools and university halls.
