Long before a diagnosis, science is already asking questions.

Why does breast cancer develop? Why do some tumours respond to treatment while others don't? And what can we still discover about this complex disease?

At GIMM, our researchers are working to understand the biological mechanisms of breast cancer, generating knowledge that may lead to new approaches for improving prevention, diagnosis and treatment. 🔬

This World Breast Cancer Day, we stand with everyone affected by breast cancer and highlight the importance of continuing to invest in scientific research. 💗

Research projects led by GIMM group leaders João Barata and Miguel Soares have been selected for funding under the CaixaResearch Health 2026 call, promoted by the “la Caixa” Foundation.

Together, the projects have secured over €1.17 million in funding, including approximately €980,000 allocated directly to GIMM.

Selected from 800 applications, the projects address two major challenges in biomedical research.

🩸 João Barata will explore how the timing of genetic mutations influences leukaemia development and response to treatment, potentially paving the way for more personalised therapeutic approaches.

🪐🧬 Scientific Session 4 — Cardiovascular

How does spaceflight affect the cardiovascular system — and what can studying these changes teach us about human health on Earth?

The fourth scientific session of the Science & Space Symposium will explore the effects of spaceflight on the cardiovascular system, while also looking at how biological samples collected through space research can support scientific discovery. The ESA Exploration Biobank, hosted at GIMM in Lisbon, preserves and manages biological samples from European space research, creating a valuable resource for studying how the human body adapts to space and extreme environments.
