This month is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Some weeks ago, my mom and I were talking again about her baby girl who was born too early (at ~22 wks) to stay. This is not a new conversation for us, but one of the things that saddened me about it was hearing again that she had no memory nor documentation of the details of her birthdate nor burial site. Despite this, she remembered the hospital, how long she stayed Earth-side, and that there was a burial. She remembered holding her and how much she looked like my eldest brother born 5 yrs later. She remembered the two women that attended the service that no one knew. She remembered how old her first niece was around that time and where they lived. Over the years that she has shared details, I have learned something new.
All of these details encouraged and allowed me (with her support) to do some research and narrow down records to find official documentation of her baby girl, my big sister. As of October 2, during this special month, we successfully obtained that documentation, and are working to locate her exact burial site. It truly has been my honor to help her find a vital piece to a puzzle she has long awaited to find.
She really is the strongest woman I know.
