🎓🩺 The LAST First Day! 🩺🎓
And just like that... our nursing seniors are officially on their LAST FIRST DAY!

These students have spent the past few years learning, growing, laughing, stressing, celebrating and becoming the nurses they are meant to be. From their first days in the nursing program to clinicals, skills labs, exams, early mornings, long nights and everything in between -- look how far they have come!

Before we know it, we will be celebrating pinning, graduation and a whole new group of nurses entering the profession!

Soak it all in seniors. You've worked hard for this moment - and we can't wait to see where this final year takes you!

On Friday we wrapped up an incredible week of UD for Kids Adventures in Nursing Camp II!

Campers explored labor and delivery, learning about the care provided to mothers and babies throughout the birthing process. They also visited our high-fidelity lab, where they watched our simulation mannequin, Victoria, deliver a baby - giving them a firsthand look at how healthcare professionals prepare for and respond to real-life situations.

Our physician Assistant students also joined in, teaching campers about X-rays, sutures, and ultrasound technology while giving them even more insight into the many different paths and specialties available within healthcare.

Thank you to all of the faculty, staff, students, and healthcare professionals who helped make UD for Kids Adventures in Nursing Camp II such a memorable experience. From emergency care and stroke education to surgery, imaging, and childbirth, our campers experienced an incredible week of hands-on learning and exploration.

We can't wait to see where these future healthcare heroes go next!

Day 4 of UD for Kids Adventures in Nursing Camp II gave our campers an unforgettable opportunity to experience the "day in the life" of a stroke patient at MercyOne.

Throughout their time, campers followed the journey of a stroke patient, beginning with emergency transport in an ambulance before moving through each step of the patient's care. Along the way, they visited CT imaging, learned how the pharmacy team prepares medications, connected with a neurologist through telemedicine, met with a stroke educator, and discovered the vital roles of social work, physical therapy, and speech therapy during rehabilitation.

By experiencing the patient's journey from start to finish, campers gained a deeper appreciation for the many healthcare professionals who work together to provide compassionate, coordinated care.

Thank you to everyone at MercyOne for sharing your time and expertise with our campers. Experiences like these inspire curiosity, build confidence, and help students envision the many possibilities within healthcare.

Day 3 of UD for Kids Adventures in Nursing Camp II was another day filled with hands-on learning and preparation for what's ahead!

Back in the UD Nursing Lab, campers focused on child and babysitting safety, learning valuable skills to help keep children safe and respond confidently in emergency situations. They also spent time preparing for today's immersive stroke experience, where they will follow the 'day in the life' of a stroke patient and gain a deeper understanding of the care patients receive - from the moment they arrive at the hospital through treatment and recovery.

Day 2 of UD for Kids Adventures in Nursing Camp II took our campers beyond the classroom and into the world of healthcare at Finley Hospital!

Campers explored the many departments that work together to provide patient care, including the lab, blood bank, microbiology, and radiology. They learned more about strokes, discovered how x-rays, CT scans, and MRIs help diagnose patients, and saw firsthand the important role each area plays in healthcare.

The day also included conversations with two physicians, who shared what a typical day looks like for a doctor, their career journeys, and the education and training required to pursue medicine.

One of the highlights was a visit to the operating room, where campers learned about about surgical safety, practiced putting on sterile gowns and globes, and got hands-on experience using laparoscopic cameras and instruments.

We're back! 🎉 UD for Kids Adventures in Nursing Camp II kicked off yesterday with an afternoon of hands-on learning!

Campers explored neurological assessments, learned about the cranial nerves, practiced seizure safety, reviewed infant CPR and first aid techniques, and gained experience recognizing severe allergic reactions and how to administer an EpiPen.

Experiential learning is at the heart of this camp, giving campers the opportunity to build confidence, develop valuable life-saving skills, and explore future careers in healthcare.

Before the classrooms fill up this fall, our nursing faculty found time to squeeze in a little time on the golf course ⛳

Their swings paid off - they tied for 2nd place in the Second Flight at the women's invitational in Dyersville!

Congrats, ladies! We love seeing our faculty enjoying time together, making memories, and representing UD Nursing so well 💙🎉

What a fantastic way to wrap up an incredible week of learning!

On Friday, our campers spent the final day exploring even more healthcare careers and building hands-on skills. They learned lifesaving techniques through Stop the Bleed training, visited the UD Physician Assistant Program to learn about the PA profession and the important role PAs play on the healthcare team. They discovered the importance of infection prevention and proper hand hygiene through a fun UV light activity that revealed just how effective (or ineffective) their handwashing was. They also explored anatomy through interactive stations, listened to normal and abnormal heart and lung sounds, practiced applying slings and braces to help care for injuries, and finished the week with outdoor games that reviewed everything they had learned throughout camp.

It was an incredible week of watching these campers grow in confidence, ask thoughtful questions, and discover the many opportunities within healthcare. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and compassion give us great hope for the future of nursing!

Day 4 of UD for Kids Nurse Camp! 🩺🏥

Yesterday our campers had the opportunity to experience healthcare beyond the classroom at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center!

Throughout the afternoon, campers explored a variety of hospital departments and learned from the healthcare professionals who make exceptional patient care possible. They:
🩹 Learned about wound and ostomy care, including how colostomy bags help patients.
💊 Toured the pharmacy and discovered how pharmacists and pharmacy technicians safely manage medications throughout the hospital.
🏥 Visited a medical unit to observe the day-to-day work of nurses caring for patients.
🧪 Went behind the scenes in the laboratory to see how blood and tissue samples are analyzed—and even had the opportunity to examine real body tissues!

Day 4 gave campers an incredible look at the many careers and specialties that work together to provide outstanding patient care. Thank you to the amazing team at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center for sharing your expertise and inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals! ❤️💙

Day 3 of UD for Kids Adventures in Nursing! Yesterday our campers stepped into the role of nurse in the UD Nursing Labs! Through hands-on activities and simulation experiences, students explored the skills nurses use every day to care for patients.

From practicing wound care, administering insulin in a real-world simulation, CPR, and working in our high-fidelity simulation lab, campers gained valuable experience and insight into the nursing profession.

We are so proud of their enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to try new things!

A special thank you to our nursing faculty and student volunteer for helping inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals. 💙
