🦌 BEEF REACTIONS: IT MAY BE MORE THAN ALPHA-GAL

When evaluating a patient with Alpha-Gal Syndrome, Alpha-Gal is only one part of the picture.

As a Certified SAAT® Provider, we evaluate multiple components that may be associated with reactions to beef:

🔹 Sarcoplasmic proteins
🔹 Collagen
🔹 Elastin
🔹 Fat

Why does this matter? Because patients can have different patterns of sensitivity, and identifying the relevant components allows us to develop a more individualized approach.

🩸 ALPHA-GAL IN THE NEWS: New Research on Blood Transfusions

Alpha-Gal Syndrome continues to show us that it can involve much more than food.

A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine analyzed 558,823 platelet and plasma transfusions across 40 medical centers in 5 countries.

🔬 Researchers found that in U.S. regions where Alpha-Gal Syndrome is common:

• Blood type O patients receiving B or AB plasma or platelets had nearly 4X the risk of an allergic transfusion reaction compared with those receiving type O products.

• The association was even stronger for moderate-to-severe reactions in high Alpha-Gal prevalence regions.

• Researchers concluded that transfusion-related reactions may represent a previously underrecognized manifestation of Alpha-Gal Syndrome.
