🌿 6 MONTHS OF GROWING IN JUST 5 MINUTES! 🌱🍅🍂

Come along as we share a little glimpse of our growing season here at Roaring Lion Ranch & Retreat! Six months of gardening, harvesting, learning, and working with Mother Nature—all wrapped up in a 5-minute video! 🎥💚

NO-DIG, REGENERATIVE GARDENING, CHOP-N-DROP & LASAGNA LAYERING… OH MY!

You’ve probably heard all these gardening terms, but what do they actually mean? And do you really need to choose just one?

Here at the Ranch, we practice ALL of them—often at the same time! And we don’t let it overwhelm us.

🌱 No-Dig Gardening: We disturb the soil as little as possible, allowing earthworms, microorganisms, and natural soil structures to thrive.

🌎 Regenerative Gardening: We focus on building healthier soil, encouraging biodiversity, and giving back to the land.

🐝 Organic Growing: We grow without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, encouraging beneficial insects and natural growing cycles.

✂️ Chop-N-Drop: Instead of hauling away healthy plant material, we cut it down and leave it right where it grew, returning organic matter and nutrients to the soil as it decomposes.

🍂 Lasagna Layering: We layer leaves, straw, compost, and other organic materials to protect and gradually enrich our garden beds, much like nature does on the forest floor!

So what does all this look like in practice?

By this time of year, our garden beds are beautifully overgrown—and that’s exactly how we like them! They’re still doing their job!

We’re continuing to harvest squash, gourds, watermelons, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, carrots, and so much more! 🍅🌶️🥕

As fall approaches, we begin preparing our beds for winter, but we don’t necessarily follow a calendar. We take our cues from Mother Nature!

We gradually chop back spent plants, leave healthy organic matter in place, and add layers of natural materials to protect and feed the soil through winter.

We’re preparing next year’s garden while this year’s garden is still giving! 🌻

And if there’s one thing we hope you take away from our video, it’s this…

💚 DON’T LET GARDENING STEAL YOUR JOY!

You don’t need perfectly manicured beds, expensive equipment, or a complicated system to grow something wonderful.

Embrace the messiness. Celebrate the harvests. Learn from the failures. Let nature do some of the work!

Our gardens aren’t meant to look perfect. They’re meant to be living, thriving ecosystems that support the soil, wildlife, pollinators, and our families.

🌿 Work WITH Mother Nature, not against her.

🎥 Enjoy 6 months of our growing season in just 5 minutes! We hope it inspires you to find a little joy in your own garden, no matter how big or small.

🌿 Indigenous Peoples Day | Honoring Our Ancestors & Celebrating Our Shared Humanity 🌎

Today, I’m celebrating my Taíno roots and honoring the generations of ancestors whose wisdom, traditions, and connection to the land helped shape who I am today. 🌺

Long before sustainability became a modern movement, our ancestors understood the importance of living with nature, respecting its resources, growing food, and caring for the land that sustained them.

I believe that connection to the land runs deep in my roots, and it’s something I carry into the work we do every day at Roaring Lion Ranch & Retreat. 🌱

But today is also a beautiful reminder that we ALL have roots worth celebrating.

Whether you have Indigenous ancestry or your family’s journey began somewhere else in the world, we each carry stories, cultures, traditions, and knowledge passed down through generations.

America is a beautiful melting pot of cultures, and I believe that’s something worth embracing! We don’t have to share the same ancestry to appreciate one another’s heritage or recognize our shared responsibility to care for the land and the world we’re leaving behind.

At the Ranch, we honor that connection through land stewardship, regenerative gardening, caring for animals, protecting pollinators, and sharing traditional skills with future generations.

We can take pride in our own identities while celebrating and respecting the identities of others. ❤️

Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity to recognize the original stewards of this land, celebrate the living cultures and resilience of Indigenous peoples, and reflect on the lessons we can all carry forward.

🌎 We may have different roots, but we share one earth.

May we never stop learning from our ancestors, sharing our traditions, and appreciating the beautiful diversity that makes up our communities. Our differences should be something that brings us together through curiosity, understanding, and mutual respect—not something that divides us.

With gratitude,

Join us for a hands-on afternoon learning the art of fall garlic planting!

There’s something rewarding about growing your own food, and garlic is one of our FAVORITE crops to share! 🌿

🌱 Learn about soil & garlic seed preparation, planting techniques, and growing your own heirloom & other garlic varieties!

🧄 You’ll go home with garlic seed starts from FIVE varieties!

• Korean Red – Hardneck
• Spanish Roja – Hardneck
• Sicilian – Softneck
• Silverwhite – Softneck
• Elephant Garlic – A unique variety with enormous cloves and a milder, sweeter flavor! Despite its name, elephant garlic is actually more closely related to leeks than true garlic. Its large bulbs make it a fun addition to any home garden!

We’ll explore the differences between hardneck, softneck, and elephant garlic, including their growing habits, flavors, harvesting, and storage.

🍂 SUNDAY • A DAY OF REST 🦁

After a busy week of fishing, tending to the animals, welcoming guests, and enjoying the changing seasons, we’re taking a little time to slow down and appreciate the beauty around us. 🎣🫏🍁

There’s always something to do on a ranch, but sometimes the most meaningful moments come when we simply stop and enjoy what nature has to offer.

Wishing everyone a peaceful Sunday filled with fresh air, gratitude, and a little well-deserved rest! 💚

🐾💚 TURNING AN UNSOLD BASKET INTO ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE BACK!

Sometimes the best part of giving back is finding another way to make a difference!

During our Annual Autumn Affair, one of our wonderful charity baskets, generously supported by Feral Funders, didn’t receive a bid. Rather than letting this $200 basket go unclaimed, we’ve decided to put it to work for another good cause!

🎁 Filled with thoughtful gifts, pet & human goodies, and special event tickets, to a Feral Funders NFP event on 10/16, this basket deserves to bring a little joy to someone!

This weekend, we’re planning a special delivery to Sangamon County Animal Control & Adoption Center team as a THANK YOU for the work they do for animals in our community. 🐶🐱

Along with the basket, we’ll be adding pet care donations from Roaring Lion Ranch’s Botanical Market & Apothecary!

We’re also excited to shine a little extra light on Feral Funders and their dedication to helping community animal rescue efforts. 💚

🐾 WANT TO HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Our local Friends of Sangamon County Animal Control could really use donations of CAT & DOG FOOD! We encourage our community to stop by Animal Control directly with donations to help support the animals in their care. Every little bit helps!

Because giving back doesn’t have to end when an event is over. Sometimes it’s just the beginning. 🐾

🎣🍂 FALL FISHING CLINICS ARE IN FULL SWING! 🐟🌿

Fall is one of our favorite times to get outdoors, enjoy the changing seasons, and introduce our community to the wonderful world of fishing!

This week, we’re casting our lines at Washington Park, later this week Sangchris Lake State Park, and then we’ll be heading over to the IDNR Pond for more fishing fun!

Did you know that Roaring Lion Ranch & Retreat proudly helps facilitate FREE fishing clinics sponsored by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Division of Fisheries?

🐟 WHAT IS THE URBAN FISHING PROGRAM?

The IDNR Urban Fishing Program was created to introduce people of all ages and backgrounds to fishing, especially those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience this wonderful outdoor activity.

Through hands-on education, the program helps participants:

🎣 Learn the Basics: From baiting hooks and casting lines to safely handling fish.

🐟 Understand Our Fisheries: Discover Illinois fish species, their habitats, and the importance of healthy aquatic ecosystems.

🌿 Practice Conservation: Learn responsible fishing techniques, fishing regulations, and how we can protect our natural resources for future generations.

💚 Connect with Nature: Encourage families, youth groups, seniors, and first-time anglers to enjoy the physical, social, and emotional benefits of spending time outdoors.

🤝 Build Community: Create opportunities for people of different ages and abilities to learn something new together!

AND THE BEST PART? THESE EDUCATIONAL CLINICS ARE FREE! 🎉

As an IDNR Urban Fishing Instructor, I’m grateful for the opportunity to help bring this program into our communities. There’s something especially rewarding about watching someone catch their very first fish or seeing a returning participant grow more confident with every cast!

🍁 LOOKING TO SCHEDULE A FALL FISHING CLINIC?

If you work with a youth organization, senior community, educational group, or community program, we’d love to help introduce your group to fishing!

Fall is a beautiful time to get outdoors, and we’re scheduling group opportunities throughout October and November.

📩 Reach out to us to learn more about scheduling a FREE IDNR Urban Fishing Clinic!

A special thank-you to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Division of Fisheries, for supporting outdoor education, conservation, and accessible fishing opportunities throughout Illinois.
