💙💛 October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month!

This month is an opportunity to celebrate people with Down Syndrome, challenge assumptions, and recognize the importance of high expectations and meaningful inclusion.

Every child with Down Syndrome is an individual, with their own personality, interests, strengths, needs, and goals. As early childhood professionals, we can help create environments where children are not simply included in the room, but are supported to participate, build relationships, learn, and belong.

Let’s continue building communities that recognize what children can do and make space for every child to be fully included.

For Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, we’re recognizing Alex Murray, Sr. CSP in our Baltimore County East Region, who was selected as a winner of this year’s Direct Support Professionals Recognition Award!

Alex has dedicated 13 years to Abilities Network and continues to demonstrate exceptional commitment to the individuals she supports as a Sr. CSP and CESP-certified professional. In 2026, she has supported multiple individuals through significant employment changes, helping them advocate for themselves, build confidence, and pursue meaningful work. One individual was struggling in a workplace where her manager frequently put her down. Alex supported her in addressing those concerns and, when she decided she wanted a new opportunity, helped her explore jobs, complete applications, and prepare for interviews. Their efforts resulted in the individual obtaining a new position, where she has become noticeably happier and more confident. Beyond her own caseload, Alex serves as a peer mentor and valuable resource to fellow CSPs, sharing her employment expertise and advocating for quality, person-centered supports.

For Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, we’re recognizing Jay Weitzel, CSP in our Baltimore County East Region, who was selected as a winner of this year’s Direct Support Professionals Recognition Award!

Jay has dedicated 26 years to Abilities Network and continues to make a meaningful impact on the individuals he supports. He has demonstrated exceptional advocacy, creativity, and commitment to helping individuals navigate major life changes while building greater independence and quality of life. When one individual retired from a long-term janitorial position, Jay supported him in securing benefits, including back pay, while also recognizing the importance of helping him find meaningful activities and interests outside of work. After learning about the individual's interest in golf, Jay encouraged him to explore that interest through local driving ranges, sporting goods stores, and watching golf. Jay is also a tremendous team player and communicator who consistently shares ideas, reports concerns, and approaches services creatively.

For Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, we’re recognizing Tim Goehner, CSP in our Harford Region, who was selected as a winner of this year’s Direct Support Professionals Recognition Award!

Tim supports an individual who is deaf and has maintained employment with the Harford County Public Library for more than 20 years. Tim provides the individualized support necessary to help this person remain successful in a long-standing career while respecting their communication needs and autonomy. He also supports other individuals through employment challenges and is flexible with his schedule to accommodate meetings, preparation, and additional support when needed. Tim is empathetic, attentive, and highly person-centered. He consistently listens to what individuals want, respects their choices, and works alongside them rather than making decisions for them. His kindness, flexibility, advocacy, and commitment to helping people maintain meaningful employment make him an excellent example of outstanding DSP service.

For Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, we’re recognizing Mat Oldham, Sr. CSP in our Harford Region, who was selected as a winner of this year’s Direct Support Professionals Recognition Award!

Mat consistently goes above and beyond in supporting individuals with disabilities in achieving and maintaining meaningful employment and greater community participation. He took the initiative to obtain his CESP certification to strengthen his employment-support knowledge and skills, and he now serves as a Senior Community Support Professional and Employment Specialist. He has helped individuals re-engage with employment after periods away from the workforce, maintain employment through individualized job supports and training, and apply CIE/CLE principles to promote independence and natural workplace supports. He also provides CDS and Personal Supports, allowing him to support individuals holistically. Mat’s dedication to professional growth, person-centered support, and helping individuals recognize and reach their potential makes him an outstanding DSP.
