Progress doesn’t always come in giant leaps. Sometimes it’s using a new coping skill, following a routine with less support, communicating a need, or navigating a challenging situation successfully.

With Therapeutic Behavior Consultation, we know that these small victories are the building blocks of meaningful, lasting change. Every step forward—no matter how small—helps create a stronger foundation for future success.

→ Celebrate the progress.
→ Recognize the effort.
→ Trust the process.

Because today’s small victories can lead to brighter futures tomorrow. 🫶🏼

“Your Interventions Aren’t Working…”

Before changing the intervention, ask yourself:

❓ Is the plan being implemented consistently?
❓ Is everyone responding the same way?
❓ Are expectations clear and realistic?
❓ Is there consistent follow-through across caregivers, staff, teachers, and support team members?

One of the most common reasons interventions fail is not because the strategy is ineffective—it’s because the strategy isn’t being implemented consistently over time.

Meaningful behavior change requires consistency, predictability, and follow-through. When responses vary from person to person or from day to day, individuals receive mixed messages about expectations, making it difficult for new skills and behaviors to develop.

Therapeutic Behavior Consultation helps teams create practical, sustainable support plans that can be implemented consistently across environments. We work alongside caregivers and support teams to ensure everyone understands the plan, feels confident implementing it, and can maintain follow-through even when situations become challenging.

Success often isn’t about finding a new intervention. It’s about ensuring the current intervention is being used consistently enough to produce meaningful results.

Consistency builds trust.
Follow-through builds learning.
Together, they create lasting change.

🌞 Hello, June! 🌞

A new month brings new opportunities to learn, grow, and make meaningful connections. As summer begins, it’s the perfect time to embrace new experiences, build skills, and create opportunities for success in everyday moments.

Whether you’re working toward personal goals, supporting a loved one, or helping someone gain greater independence, remember that progress is made one step at a time. Every conversation, every challenge, and every achievement matters.

At Old Town ABA, we believe growth doesn’t stop when school ends. Summer offers countless opportunities to practice communication, social skills, problem-solving, and independence in natural, meaningful ways.

Welcome, June! Here’s to sunshine, growth, learning, and making the most of every opportunity. 🌻🌳

Assistive technology can create more independence, safety, communication, and confidence for individuals with developmental disabilities. 💙

From AAC devices and visual schedules to smart home supports and medication reminders, the right tools can make everyday life more accessible and empowering.

If you’re applying through the Developmental Disability Waiver, don’t overlook assistive technology requests that support daily living, communication, mobility, and community inclusion.

Every person deserves supports that help them thrive. ✨

Organizations in Virginia that help evaluate or identify assistive technology include:

• Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS)
• Virginia Easy Access Assistive Technology Resources

If you are trying to prepare waiver requests, examples of wording people commonly use include:

“Needs visual prompting technology to complete activities of daily living independently.”

“Requires medication management technology for health and safety.”

“Needs AAC device to communicate wants, needs, and medical concerns.”

“Requires environmental controls to safely access home environment.”

“Needs sensory regulation technology to prevent behavioral escalation.”

For waiver approval, requests usually need:

• A documented disability-related need
• A recommendation from a professional (OT, SLP, behavioral specialist, etc.)
• Evidence the device increases independence, safety, communication, or community access
• Confirmation that it is not otherwise covered by Medicaid, school, or insurance

☀️ Learning Still Continues Through the Summer ☀️

Summer break doesn’t mean growth has to pause. In fact, some of the best learning opportunities happen outside of the classroom and discrete trial teaching.

At Old Town ABA, we encourage families to remember that learning can be naturally embedded into daily life — and contriving opportunities for growth can be easier than you think!

🌿 A trip to the grocery store can become a chance to practice communication, waiting, identifying items, making choices, and social skills.

🍦 Ordering ice cream can help build confidence, requesting, turn taking, and flexibility.

🏊 Pool days can support following directions, safety skills, transitions, and peer interaction.

🧺 Helping with laundry or cooking can encourage independence, sequencing, matching, and responsibility.

🚗 Even car rides can create opportunities for conversation, labeling, answering questions, and expanding language.

Learning does not always have to look like worksheets or structured table time. Some of the most meaningful progress comes from consistent, real-world practice in environments that feel fun, motivating, and natural to the individual. 🌈

As providers and caregivers, we can help “contrive” opportunities simply by slowing down, creating moments for communication, encouraging problem solving, and allowing individuals the space to participate actively in everyday routines.

✨ Small moments matter.
✨ Consistency matters.
✨ Connection matters.

This summer, focus on progress over perfection and remember that every outing, routine, and interaction can become an opportunity to learn, grow, and build independence.

At Old Town ABA, we love helping families incorporate therapeutic strategies into everyday life while keeping learning engaging, individualized, and meaningful.

From its beginnings in Wi******er 📍to now serving families across the entire state of Virginia, Old Town ABA was built on a vision of providing compassionate, ethical, and values-based behavioral services to individuals and families who deserve the highest quality of care.

At the heart of that vision is Rachel Evans — owner, mentor, leader, and the driving force behind Old Town ABA since its founding in 2021. With more than nine years of experience in Applied Behavior Analysis, Rachel has dedicated her career to supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other intellectual and developmental disabilities while building a business rooted in integrity, collaboration, and meaningful outcomes.

What began as a consultative ABA practice in the Shenandoah Valley 🗻 has expanded into a statewide organization supporting children, adults, families, schools, and communities throughout Virginia. Rachel continues to provide oversight and leadership to the Old Town ABA team while mentoring future behavior analysts and fostering excellence across the field.

Rachel’s passion for this work is deeply personal and inspired by her younger brother, Michael, an adult with Autism. 🧩Her firsthand understanding of the challenges families face has shaped Old Town ABA into more than a company — it is a mission-driven organization focused on helping individuals feel accepted, empowered, and successful in their everyday lives.

Through her leadership, Old Town ABA has become known for high-quality therapeutic consultation services, evidence-based practices, ethical care, and a team culture centered around compassion and professional growth. Rachel’s dedication to families, mentorship of aspiring clinicians, and unwavering commitment to the Autism and ID/DD community continue to make a lasting impact throughout Virginia ✨

At Old Town ABA, we believe meaningful support is not about quick fixes — it’s about creating lasting change that improves quality of life for the long term.

Our Therapeutic Behavior Consultation services are designed with longevity in mind, focusing on individualized strategies that empower individuals, families, caregivers, and support teams to build sustainable success across home, school, and community settings.

Through collaboration, consistency, compassion, and evidence-based practices, we work to help individuals develop functional skills, increase independence, strengthen communication, and reduce barriers that impact everyday life. Every goal we target is centered around creating meaningful outcomes that continue far beyond services alone.

We understand that progress looks different for everyone. Sometimes the biggest victories are the small moments — improved routines, stronger relationships, increased confidence, successful transitions, or learning new ways to navigate challenges. Those moments matter, and they build the foundation for lifelong growth.

Our team is committed to walking alongside families and support systems every step of the way by providing guidance, education, advocacy, and individualized support tailored to each person’s unique needs and strengths.

Because true success is not measured by short-term results, but by the ability to create lasting, meaningful impact that continues into the future. 🌱
