The Grief We Carry: Black and Brown Families Navigating Disability, Loss, and Hope is a powerful half-day symposium presented by ABA Centers of Pennsylvania, in partnership with Ausomeness Inc. and Your Voice Heard, LLC.

This symposium is designed to explore the often-unspoken experiences of grief, resilience, advocacy, and healing within Black and Brown communities impacted by disability.
This unique gathering brings together families, self-advocates, practitioners, educators, community leaders, and policymakers to engage in meaningful conversations about the emotional, social, and systemic challenges that arise when navigating disability. Through lived experiences, professional expertise, and community-centered dialogue, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how grief can show up throughout the disability journey and how hope, healing, and collective support can help families move forward.

The symposium will examine topics such as ambiguous loss, caregiver grief, cultural perspectives on disability, mental health and wellness, community advocacy, and strategies for building stronger support systems for individuals with disabilities and their families.

The 2026 Disability Summit is October 7th and 8th at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

In 2026, Philadelphia will mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. This year of celebration also presents an opportunity to envision the future as we look ahead to the next 250 years. We envision a city and region that works for all of us, where people with disabilities thrive, and where the disability community is celebrated in all spaces from large events down to the smallest neighborhood.

Cities of Inclusion, an initiative of Special Olympics Pennsylvania, and EmpathyTech, and initiative of Pletly, are organizing “The 2026 Disability Summit: Envisioning the Future of Disability Inclusion,” a summit designed to celebrate all that has been accomplished over the last 250 years while looking ahead to the future as we come together as a community to envision a Philadelphia region that works for all of us. This summit will offer the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with a diverse range of leaders across the disability community and beyond who will guide us through how we transform current challenges into actionable solutions for building a truly inclusive city and region.

The 2026 Cities of Inclusion Disability Summit—organized by Cities of Inclusion (an initiative of Special Olympics Pennsylvania) and EmpathyTech—is part of Philadelphia’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. It focuses on envisioning a future where people with disabilities thrive in fully inclusive communities.
