Have you ever tried hard to relax, and somehow felt worse?

It's one of those strange things. The more you tell yourself to calm down, to switch off, to let go, the more stubbornly the tension seems to stay.

There's a reason for that. Calm isn't something you can always force. If anything, the trying becomes one more thing to push against.

The body works the other way round. It doesn't soften because you've ordered it to. It softens when it feels there's no longer any need to hold on.

So in Gentle Release, we don't try to make anything relax. We slow down. We give the body time, and quiet, and a sense that nothing here is being forced. And often, that is when it finally eases. Not because it was made to, but because it was allowed to.

It can feel almost too simple. Less effort, not more. But that is usually where the softening begins.

If you'd like a gentle way in, the self-paced Introduction to Gentle Release Therapy is a soft first step: www.gentlereleasetherapy.com/IntroGRT

Gently and not forced, maybe it’s time to put down some of that tension you’ve been carrying…….

You can be bone tired and still unable to switch off.

The body stays a little braced. The shoulders sit up near the ears. The jaw doesn't quite let go, even in sleep. You lie down and the mind starts its evening laps of everything unfinished.

A lot of this lives along the vagus nerve, the long, wandering nerve that runs from the base of the skull down through the neck and chest and into the gut. It is part of how the body knows it is safe enough to settle. When it has been holding stress for a long time, it can keep you in a quiet state of readiness, long after the thing you were braced for has passed.

The gentle approach we work with doesn't try to force the nerve to behave, or stimulate it into action. It does the opposite. It allows the body to put down some of what it has been carrying, slowly, in its own time.

Your body isn't broken. More often, it is simply braced. And bracing softens when it feels safe, not when it is pushed.

If this sounds familiar, there's more about the work here, and you can find a practitioner near you (many work at a distance too): www.gentlereleasetherapy.com/vagusnerve

For anyone who has been humming, cold-plunging, and trying every breathing app, and still feels like something underneath hasn't quite let go, this is for you.

The vagus nerve doesn't always need more stimulation. Sometimes it needs permission to release what it has been quietly holding.

Sara Agnew and I have been developing the Gentle Release Vagus Nerve Protocol together for the past few years. The blog tells the story of how it came to be, inspired by trying to help my daughter.
