Which one shows up most for you?

The worry about when the next flare-up will hit?

Living with a chronic illness is so much more than just the physical symptoms and if you get overwhelmed by the weight of it all, you're not alone.

This isn’t something we’re really taught.

But it’s the kind of thing you end up needing when you’re going through something or even just in day-to-day life.

That's why I wanted to run this session as part of the Cork Lifelong Learning Festival.

We’ll explore why things like this can start to snowball and how you can use mindfulness to support your wellbeing.

Everything changes.

Even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

Sometime if you're feeling stuck it can help to look up at the sky.

The weather doesn’t stay the same for long.

One minute it’s clear,
the next it’s lashing rain
—and if you live in Ireland,
the sun then breaks through
before it starts hailing!

It's always changing.

And maybe what we’re experiencing
isn’t as fixed as it feels either.

It takes about 15 seconds for something pleasant to really register with us.

There’s a reason one offhand comment or small mistake during the day can play on our minds while the nice things that happened barely seem to register.

Our brains are wired to prioritise threat so they place more weight on negative experiences. So much so that it takes five positive experiences to balance out just one negative one.

This is why mindfulness involves 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 — not to force positivity, but to gently balance what the brain is already doing automatically.

I’m really looking forward to leading the Body Scan & Breathwork class at BCS this term ✨

The darker evenings and weather we're having at the moment just feels like the perfect invitation to slow down.
