Are you an employer in the tourism and hospitality sector? EmpowerNL is partnering with Tourism HR Canada and Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador to support tourism businesses like yours.

Through this collaboration, you can connect with qualified candidates and take part in the Belong: Accessible Tourism Workplaces, which offers practical training on becoming a more inclusive employer and hiring people with disabilities. Best of all, the training is free - so don't miss out!

With the weather (slowly) getting nicer, and the downtown St. John's pedestrian mall about to open (June 25th), we thought we'd share a few safety tips for people with disabilities when getting out and about this summer.

🌞 As plants and trees bloom and grow, watch the sidewalk for fallen or overhanging vegetation
🌞 Pay attention to protruding objects like signs, tables and table umbrellas
🌞 Scan for extension cords being used to power outdoor lights, fans or food trucks
🌞 Scout out seasonal hazards like hoses, bicycles and outdoor furniture
🌞 Leave room between yourself and outdoor diners in case they push their chairs back unexpectedly
🌞 Mind the angled sides of temporary/portable ramps
🌞 Shade your eyes with sunglasses or an umbrella to prevent bright sun glare from hiding hazards

Stay tuned next week as we talk about how the summer heat can affect different disabilities and what to do about it!

As a follow-up to the Accessible Public Transportation Virtual Town Hall held in March 2025, we're asking you to share your experiences using accessible public transportation over the past 12 months (May 2025 – June 2026).

Your feedback will help identify barriers and improve accessible transportation services in your area.

The survey can be found here: https://ow.ly/lZZi50ZbPv0

If you need help completing this survey, please contact [email protected] or call (709) 722-4031.

In Canada, there at 8 million people (over 15 years of age) with a disability. Of those, 39% (or over 3 million) have a mental health related disability.

Yet in those members of the disability community who also belong to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, mental health disabilities are seen at a staggering 69.9%!

The importance of the impact of intersectionality cannot be ignored.

The disability community must acknowledge and advocate for our community members that face additional discrimination based on being members of other marginalized groups. And other marginalized groups must prioritize the inclusion of and accessibility for their disabled members.

Did you know that 684,090 disabled Canadians (over 15 years of age) are also part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community? That's 11...

Did you know that 684,090 disabled Canadians (over 15 years of age) are also part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community? That's 11.5% (versus 4.4% of the general population) if you're into the numbers.

This is important because it highlights the need for the disability community to ensure our spaces are safe and welcoming for 2SLGBTQIA+ disabled folks. It also emphasizes the need for accessibility at Pride events and withing 2SLGBTQIA+ spaces!
